Common’s New Memoir Shares His History of Molestation

Common is opening up about a traumatic experience from his past.

The rapper was caught leaving NBC, in New York, when he was approached about his latest accomplishment. Common has a memoir that he’s coming out with, called Let Love Have the Last Word. The book goes into depth about his love life and experience with therapy, including one big reveal.

In the book, Common opens up about his childhood– the same childhood in which he admitted he was molested. At the age of 9 or 10, Common describes how he was molested by a family friend, while on a family trip.

“I was excited for a road trip I was about to take with my family. My mother; my godmother, Barbara; her son and my godbrother Skeet; and his relative, who I’ll call Brandon…”

It’s a one-time experience, and he’s tried to push it as far away as possible. However, while working with fellow actress, Laura Dern, the memories came back. In the book, he writes, “he kept saying ‘It’s okay, It’s okay,’ as he pulled down my shorts and molested me. After he stopped he kept asking me to perform it on him. I kept repeating ‘No’ and pushing him away,”

Many times, people write books to tell their most private business in order to become best-sellers, but in this situation, Common isn’t after fame. Instead, he just wants to help people. The 47-year-old is seeing a therapist to help him cope with his past and states that he just wants to do the same for other people.

The book is available May 7.
