Ciara is once again standing by her man.
For nearly a decade, the singer has faced criticism over her husband Russell Wilson’s role as stepdad to her 11-year-old son, Future Zahir — the child she shares with rapper Future. But through it all, Ciara has never wavered in her defense of Wilson’s place in their blended family.
“There’s a difference between boys and men. To me, men love a certain way….I feel blessed when I look at my husband, that standard is top tier,”
Ciara said in recent remarks defending Wilson’s devotion to their blended family.
The scrutiny began in 2015, shortly after Ciara and Wilson started dating. Future publicly expressed frustration that the NFL star was around his son so early in the relationship. During a Breakfast Club interview, the rapper famously said,
“You don’t bring a man around your son. You’ve known this man for a few months, and you’re bringing him around your kid? Who does that?”
Ciara pushed back at the time, pointing out what she felt was a clear double standard. Speaking on CBS’s This Morning, she noted that when she and Future were together, she had cared for his children from previous relationships.
“What’s the difference here?” she asked. “Wouldn’t you want someone to love on your child?”
Since then, Ciara has clarified that she sees Wilson as her partner and a devoted father figure. Over the years, she’s praised the Denver Broncos quarterback for always showing up for their kids, even with his demanding schedule. “He makes them his pride and joy,” she’s said, noting that he rarely misses a school event or milestone moment.
Still, the couple hasn’t been immune to public scrutiny. Wilson often posts about his stepson on social media — celebrating everything from football practices to birthdays — which has sparked criticism from some who claim he’s “doing too much.” But Ciara has never entertained that backlash, insisting that her husband’s heart is always in the right place.
For his part, Wilson has spoken openly about his bond with Future Zahir. In a 2024 podcast, he recalled meeting him as a baby. “God said to me, ‘Raising this child, it’s going to be your responsibility,’” Wilson said. He called being a stepdad both a “gift” and an “opportunity,” even comparing his role to Joseph of Nazareth.
Now, at 11 years old, Future Zahir appears to thrive in the blended family dynamic. He’s often spotted alongside Wilson at NFL practices and games, recently posing confidently with other players like Malik Nabers.
Ciara and Wilson, who married in 2016, welcomed three more children: daughters Sienna Princess, 8, Amora Princess, 1, and son Win Harrison, 5. The family recently celebrated the couple’s ninth wedding anniversary with heartfelt tributes to their life together.
While Future has continued to reference the situation in interviews and even in his music — most recently in 2023 — Ciara and Wilson have chosen to rise above. They’ve repeatedly said they focus on creating a loving and stable home for all four children.
At the end of the day, Ciara says, it comes down to one simple truth:
“What matters most is that our children are loved and supported.”
