A shocking residential burglary of NFL quarterback Joe Burrow’s home has resulted in four Chileans in federal detention after a December 9, 2024, home invasion when Burrow was away in a game saw approximately $300,000 in designer merchandise taken. The suspects, in their hurry, also created a digital trail of evidence in the form of selfies posing in Burrow’s signature accessories
Despite security guards at Burrow’s Anderson Township home, burglars broke in undetected. The intruders probably entered in through the woods in the back of the house and came in through a broken master bedroom window. There was a security check at 6 p.m., reporting there was no breaches, yet one of Burrow’s business partners saw evidence of a break-in at 8:15 p.m. There was a surveillance video that recorded a suspect carrying luggage in the woods around 7:18 p.m.
The thieves took around $300,000 in stolen goods, including designer handbags, watches, sunglasses, and jewelry. Among the stolen pieces was Burrow’s distinctive “JB9” chain, a signature accessory of the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback. In a bizarre twist, the suspects took selfies wearing the stolen jewelry and later shared images of the loot, including cash and luxury goods, on social media.
Authorities identified four suspects: Jordan Francisco Quiroga Sanchez (22), Bastian Alejandro Orellana Morales (23), Sergio Andres Ortega Cabello (38), and Alexander Chavez (age not given), all of whom are Chileans. The suspects were taken into custody during a regular traffic stop in Clark County, Ohio, on Jan. 10, 2025. Officers found stolen merchandise, such as a LSU T-shirt and a Bengals cap, in conjunction with tools used in burglaries that are typically used by South American rings of burglars. The suspects face federal charges of transportation of stolen property in interstate commerce and making false reports. The authorities believe that this ring is linked to a massive crime ring in South America that has been striking homes of high-profile players across the United States.
Authorities linked a vehicle that was seen in the area of Burrow’s home to the break-in, making the suspects. The forensic analysis of Cabello’s phone also revealed evidence-incriminating pictures, including pictures of stolen goods and the back of Burrow’s house. The majority of these pictures were unexpectedly deleted shortly after the traffic stop, suggesting that there was a effort to destroy evidence.
Further investigations also uncovered a connection between the burglary and a pawn shop in Diamond District in New York. Juan Villar and Dimitriy Nezhinskiy were arrested for conspiracy to receive stolen property after acting as fences for the crime ring, it is alleged. The two men have pleaded not guilty and stand to face harsh penalties if found guilty.
The burglary of Burrow’s home is one of a troubling trend in which homes of professional sports players are robbed by groups of professional burglars, often nationals of South America. There have been reports of such burglaries in recent months of NFL players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, as well as of NBA players Luka Doncic, Mike Conley Jr., and Bobby Portis.
Investigators note that such groups employ sophisticated methods such as drones, signal jamming devices, and strategic use of unused terrain to navigate security systems.
