Charlie Sheen’s candid revelations about his past battles with sex addiction and secret payoffs to hide his sexual escapades have thrust the actor back into the spotlight. In a raw interview on Good Morning America with Michael Strahan on September 5, 2025, Sheen opened up about his upcoming memoir, The Book of Sheen, set for release on September 9, 2025, and a Netflix documentary, aka Charlie Sheen, premiering September 10, 2025. The 60-year-old star didn’t hold back, detailing his struggles with addiction, sexual experimentation, and the heavy price he paid to keep it all under wraps.
Reflecting on that period, he said he was likely a sex addict, caught in a whirlwind of excess fueled by drugs and fame. Even more revealing, Charlie Sheen disclosed for the first time that he experimented with men during his heavy crack cocaine use in the late 2000s. He described it as “flipping the menu over” to try “the other side of the menu,” calling some experiences “weird” but “fun.” These encounters, however, came with a steep cost: “a tremendous amount of extortion.” Sheen revealed he paid millions to silence partners who threatened to expose his sexual activities and his HIV diagnosis, which he first shared publicly in 2015.
“I was held hostage by my own secrets,”
He told Strahan, explaining how going public freed him from the blackmail.
The Two and a Half Men star also reflected on his sobriety, noting he’s been clean since 2017, quitting drugs in 2015 after his HIV diagnosis and alcohol two years later when his body began “turning inside out.” Now, he’s focused on being a reliable father to his five children: Cassandra, 40, with ex Paula Profit; Sami, 21, and Lola, 20, with ex-wife Denise Richards; and twins Bob and Max, 16, with ex-wife Brooke Mueller. Sheen expressed regret over his 2011 public meltdown, when he coined phrases like “tiger blood” and “winning” during a chaotic 20/20 interview, blaming it partly on testosterone cream that sparked “roid rage.” He called his subsequent 20-city speaking tour a “bad idea” and hopes his memoir and documentary will shift focus to his acting career and recovery.
Born Carlos Irwin Estévez in 1965 to actor Martin Sheen and artist Janet Templeton, Sheen grew up in a showbiz family alongside siblings Emilio, Ramon, and Renée Estevez. His 40-year career includes iconic roles in Platoon, Wall Street, and Two and a Half Men, where he earned up to $2 million per episode before his 2011 firing after clashing with creator Chuck Lorre.
Sheen’s struggles with cocaine, heroin, and crack, combined with his sex addiction, often overshadowed his talent. His 2015 HIV disclosure, prompted by $10 million in extortion payments, led to the “Charlie Sheen effect,” boosting HIV awareness. Now sober, Sheen is rebuilding ties with his family, including Richards and Mueller, who appear in his documentary alongside co-star Jon Cryer.
As Sheen prepares for a book tour starting September 8, 2025, in Manhattan, he’s determined to own his past.
“I’m not a victim,”
He said, emphasizing accountability. With The Book of Sheen, aka Charlie Sheen, the actor aims to redefine his legacy, moving beyond tabloid headlines to highlight his journey from chaos to clarity.
