Authorities in Nevada are investigating the death of an unidentified man discovered in a “pool of blood” at the Burning Man festival on Saturday night, treating the case as a homicide.
The body was found around 9:14 p.m. on August 30, just as the festival’s iconic wooden effigy—known simply as “the Man”—was set ablaze during the climactic ceremony in Black Rock City, a temporary community erected annually in the Black Rock Desert about 110 miles north of Reno.
A festival attendee alerted a Pershing County Sheriff’s deputy after spotting “a male subject lying in a pool of blood” near the intersection of 8th and I Streets, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies and Bureau of Land Management rangers responded immediately and found “a single white adult male lying on the ground, obviously deceased.”
The discovery occurred as tens of thousands of attendees gathered for the festival’s most celebrated ritual—burning the massive wooden structure that symbolizes the event’s spirit of community and self-expression.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Science Division was called to process the scene. Authorities quickly secured the area and interviewed several nearby festivalgoers.
Sheriff Jerry Allen described the case as “complicated,” citing the challenges of investigating a city that will vanish within days. “We must work quickly,” he said, noting that Black Rock City is dismantled shortly after the festival ends.
On Monday, September 1, investigators released a description of the victim in hopes of identifying him. Authorities said the man is:
- White male adult, 35–40 years old
- Approximately 6 feet tall, 200 pounds
- Short brown hair with facial hair
The case has been assigned number 25-318. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office at 775-273-2641 or 775-273-5111 and request Investigator Josh Nicholson.
Sheriff Allen stressed that the incident appears to be “a singular crime” but urged festival participants to “remain vigilant of their surroundings and acquaintances.” He added that authorities are searching for “any person who would commit such a heinous crime against another human being.”
The investigation involves multiple agencies, including the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Land Management rangers, and Burning Man’s Black Rock Rangers.
The Burning Man Project confirmed in a statement that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement. “The safety and well-being of our community are paramount,” the organization said, asking attendees not to interfere with the investigation.
Organizers also activated support services for festivalgoers, including free public WiFi access, 24/7 peer support from Black Rock Rangers, and crisis counseling through the Emergency Services Department.
This case marks the third consecutive year in which a death has been reported at Burning Man. In 2024, a woman died of an asthma attack in her sleep, and in 2023, an attendee was found unconscious during heavy rains and flooding that stranded thousands.
This year’s gathering, held from August 24 to September 1, drew an estimated 70,000–80,000 people for a week of wilderness camping, large-scale art installations, and experimental performances. The homicide investigation now casts a dark shadow over an event that celebrates radical self-expression and communal living.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to identify the victim and locate any suspects.
