Benny Blanco is opening up about his relationship with Selena Gomez, revealing a mix of deep love and lingering fears. In a candid interview with Interview Magazine, the 36-year-old music producer confessed that he’s “so scared” his fiancée and creative partner, Selena Gomez, might one day change her mind about being with him.
“I worship the ground she walks on, and I feel like she feels the same way about me; there’s no ego between us. She’s rooting for me to succeed, and I’m doing the same for her.”
Blanco said.
Despite this mutual love and respect, Blanco admitted he couldn’t shake the fear that Gomez could suddenly decide to leave.
“I wake up every morning—I know she does the same thing—and I think, ‘How can I make her life better? But sometimes, I get this scary thought that she could wake up and just say, ‘What? No.’”
He shared.
Gomez, 32, responded playfully to his fears, smiling and assuring him that he’s “stuck” with her. She called his words “very romantic,” clearly moved by his vulnerability.
Blanco and Gomez’s relationship began as a friendship long before it turned romantic. They first met in 2013 through Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey, when Gomez was starring in Wizards of Waverly Place, and Blanco was making a name for himself as a producer. Their bond grew stronger over the years, with Blanco working on several tracks for Gomez, including songs from her 2015 album Revival.
However, it wasn’t until June 2023 that their friendship blossomed into romance. By December 2024, they announced their engagement, surprising fans worldwide.
Their relationship has now inspired an entire album. The couple’s first joint project, I Said I Love You First, will be released on March 21, 2025. The album is a deeply personal collection of songs that chronicle their love story, giving fans an intimate look into their journey as both partners and collaborators.
The lead single, Scared of Loving You, co-written with Finneas O’Connell, explores the complexities of their relationship, revealing the fears and vulnerabilities they face together. The song resonates with fans, echoing Blanco’s real-life anxieties about losing Gomez.
Despite their excitement about working together, Blanco and Gomez were initially cautious.
“We agreed from the start, ‘If this ever gets weird, we’ll cancel it immediately,’ We didn’t want our work to interfere with what we have.”
Blanco revealed.
Gomez admitted to feeling a bit nervous initially but soon grew comfortable as they found their rhythm.
“I didn’t feel any pressure, but I had some jitters in the beginning, But once we got started, everything just fell into place naturally, with a lot of hard work and love.”
She shared.
One key motivation behind I Said I Love You First was to connect with Gomez’s loyal fan base. Knowing her fans’ passion, Blanco wanted the music to feel authentic and relatable.
“It’s not just about making hits, We wanted every word to mean something. We wanted the lyrics to resonate with people who have followed Selena through all her highs and lows.”
Gomez echoed his sentiments, emphasizing the importance of being open and honest in their songwriting.
“We were able to share our fears and hopes, That vulnerability is what makes the music so real, and I think fans will feel that.”
she said.
The first single, Scared of Loving You, is already out, giving listeners a preview of the emotional journey the album promises. Gomez shared her excitement on Instagram, writing, “I always trick you guys 🥰. My NEW album I Said I Love You First with my best friend @itsbennyblanco, is out on 3/21 🖤.” She also announced that merchandise and signed products are available for pre-order.
Blanco sweetly responded in the comments, saying, “I love you, baby,” melting fans’ hearts even more.
The decision to work with one another extended beyond music and their emotional relationship. Working with one another made them more honest with each other, Gomez said.
“Collaborating allowed us to open up to each other in ways we hadn’t before, It was raw and real, bringing us even closer.”
Blanco admired Gomez’s honesty in being truthful with her lyrics.
“Selena writes from a place of emotion. She’s been through a lot and is not afraid to share her experiences, I wanted to match her honesty with my own.”
he said.
Despite their fairy-tale-like relationship, the couple has not been without its share of troubles, including being under intense media spotlight and what people say. Gomez has been quite outspoken when addressing mental health and needing people surrounding them.
Blanco’s candidness about his insecurities humanizes their relationship even more. Like every other couple, they experience real fears. But their understanding and respect for one another helped them overcome such difficulties.
As they prepare for the album’s release, Blanco and Gomez are excited—but also a bit anxious—to see how fans react.
“We poured our hearts into this album, It’s a piece of us, and sharing it with the world feels both thrilling and terrifying.”
Gomez said.
Blanco shared his nerves, admitting,
“I just hope she doesn’t wake up one day and decide, ‘What? No.’ But until then, I’m savoring every moment we have together.”
With I Said I Love You First on its way, music lovers can’t help but be eager for the love saga to be heard. The album isn’t a collection of tracks, more of a journey of the heart, of hopes and anxieties of two people, and their love in the spotlight.
