Austin Florian’s VENOM Helmet: Team USA Skeleton Star’s Gear

The Team USA skeleton racer grabbed social media’s attention this week in Cortina d’Ampezzo thanks to a custom helmet inspired by Venom, the sharp-toothed antihero from the Spider-Man universe. And in a sport where athletes hurtle head-first down an icy track at more than 80 mph, bold visuals go a long way.

Florian’s helmet featured a glossy black base with dramatic white eye panels stretching around the sides, closely echoing Venom’s signature comic-book glare. Under the bright track lights at the Cortina Sliding Centre, the finish reflected like liquid metal. Close-up shots during the broadcast revealed subtle vein-like detailing and layered shading that gave the design a sense of motion — even before he launched himself down the course.

When Florian sprinted at the start line and dove onto his sled, cameras caught the helmet low against the ice, creating the illusion that Venom himself was skimming inches above the track. Within hours, clips circulated widely online as fans praised the look as one of the coolest designs of the Games. Sports outlet Bleacher Report included it in roundups of standout Olympic gear, while commentators compared the aesthetic to a flashy custom airbrush job — bold, aggressive and impossible to ignore.

The viral moment added extra buzz to Florian’s Olympic campaign. The 31-year-old entered the Games as the 2025 IBSF World Championship gold medalist in the skeleton mixed team event and delivered the fastest start time of the field in his opening run. He placed 14th in the first heat with a time of 56.95 seconds, improved to ninth in the second, and sat 13th overall after two heats with a combined 1:53.54. He advanced to the final heats on Feb. 13 with hopes of earning what would be the first Olympic medal in men’s skeleton for the United States since 2014.

While skeleton remains one of the Winter Olympics’ most extreme disciplines — athletes race face-down at highway speeds with only a helmet and skin-tight suit separating them from the ice — it’s also one of the most visually striking. With competitors’ faces largely obscured, helmet designs often double as personal branding.

In Florian’s case, the Venom theme fit seamlessly with skeleton’s high-adrenaline reputation. And whether or not he lands on the podium, he’s already won one unofficial title in Cortina: most talked-about helmet of the Games.
