Are The New York Knicks Looking To Become Contenders In The East?

The NBA offseason has been nothing short of sensational. Many teams around the league have made blockbuster trades and big signings that will affect this upcoming season. The New York Knicks have been pretty active this offseason and appear to have their eyes on another big-time player, according to NBA Insider Shams Charania. The Utah Jazz has been dealing away some of their biggest assets in return for tons of draft capital and solid role players. This tends to signify a rebuild or a possible power move to package all of their capital and acquire some big-time players. Jazz star SG Donovan Mitchell appears to be a potential piece they’re looking to deal away.

“The Jazz and Knicks have started discussions on a Donovan Mitchell trade, sources tell me and @Tjonesonthenba,” Charania tweeted. “New York has Utah’s focus currently, among interested teams.”

How Much Sense Does This Move Make for the New York Knicks?

The Knicks are in desperate need of a legitimate PG or backcourt. For years, the Knicks have struggled to find offense for themselves. Furthermore, someone to lead and run the offense. Mitchell has the potential to create for himself as well as others. Not to mention, Mitchell is a New York native!

This can be the revival of the city the Knicks need. So far, they’ve signed former Dallas Mavericks PG Jalen Brunson who is there to help spread the floor. He can potentially help run the offense. Donovan “Spidah” Mitchell will be able to come in and score at will amongst opposing teams opening the floor up for hopeful SG RJ Barrett. The only downside to this trade may come in the fact that to receive Mitchell they may have to deal away their biggest asset and a decent amount of draft capital.

In 2021, Mitchell averaged 25.9 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds on a Jazz team that was limited offensively. Now, if he gets positioned besides other players capable of 20+ points and creating for themselves this can make the Knicks a threat going forward. However, defensively they may struggle as they probably would be losing a lot of sizes.
