Larry Connor, who resides in Ohio and made his wealth in real estate is planning a trip to the Titanic wreckage. He is planning to take one of the two-man submersibles—specifically, a Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer—to the wreck of the Titanic. Valued at $20 million, this and others like it are designed to repeatedly take on the deep ocean, operating at depths of about 4,000 meters—deeper than the Titanic’s 3,800. Connor would like to show that this journey can be taken in safety. He aims to demonstrate that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful, enjoyable, and life-changing if approached the right way.
The OceanGate incident was an implosion event that occurred with the Titan submersible in June 2023. This event was involving an American tourism and expedition company, OceanGate, whereby the Titan implosion had occurred within the last few hours of Newfoundland, Canada, which is off the coast, on an expedition for view access of the downed Titanic site in the North Atlantic Ocean. The implosion led to their instant deaths—all five who occupied the submersible.
The victims of the OceanGate disaster include the following five deaths:
- Stockton Rush, the American CEO of OceanGate.
- Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French deep-sea explorer and Titanic expert.
- Hamish Harding, a British businessman.
- Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani-British businessman.
- Suleman Dawood, Shahzada Dawood’s son.
The wreck of the Titanic is such a unique view into history. The wreck is in two parts, with the bow and the stern section separated by about 800 meters. The enormous debris field surrounds the wreckage of the broken vessel. The wreckage is littered with man-made detritus. Even now, over all those years since, the Titanic bow is still instantly recognizable. The stunning photos from the site capture the Titanic’s bow, a propeller, an officer’s cabin porthole, and even a few cooking pots with dozens of dinner plates.
