Kid Cudi left Ye’s Yeezy Season 01 runway show praising his longtime collaborator and lighting a joint whose tip glowed bright purple on camera, turning a private post-show moment into the internet’s main distraction.
In Instagram Stories shared after the November 4, 2026 presentation at Droam 1 on Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles, Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, better known as Kid Cudi, still wore the grey suit from the event. Drawing on the blunt, he said he was “really proud of my big bro,” called the show “incredible,” and noted the new store as proof Ye was “in this new place in his life.” He added that 2026 had been the best year of his life so far, full of blessings.
The compliments registered. The visual dominated. Clips spread quickly on X and elsewhere. Fans compared the glowing tip to vibranium, Infinity Stones, Thanos pack, a nuclear reactor, and “Purple Haze.” Accounts including No Jumper amplified the footage with the observation that social media was left wondering what Cudi was smoking.
The most likely explanation is a common quirk of smartphone cameras rather than an exotic strain or digital filter. The hot cherry of a lit joint emits infrared radiation. Human eyes cannot see it, yet many phone sensors detect near-infrared wavelengths in low light and render them purple or other unexpected colors. The same principle appears in some night-vision and thermal imaging effects. Purple cannabis strains exist because of anthocyanin pigments, but the glowing tip itself is far more consistent with a sensor artifact.
The moment fits Cudi’s own public history with cannabis. He has described earlier periods when he smoked “maybe 15 blunts a day” that “truly ruled my life,” followed by a deliberate cutback so that a single joint can last much of a day. The post-show session read as celebratory rather than routine.
Behind the viral clip sits a nearly two-decade friendship between Kid Cudi, 42, of Cleveland, and Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye Omari West, 49. Cudi signed to G.O.O.D. Music in 2008. The pair collaborated extensively, including the 2018 joint album Kids See Ghosts. Public breaks followed, notably in 2022 over Cudi’s friendship with Pete Davidson during Davidson’s relationship with Kim Kardashian, and later comments by Ye about the late designer Virgil Abloh that Cudi called unforgivable. In 2025 Cudi said he was “done.”
Reconciliation became public in September 2026 when the two performed together at Ye’s Chicago stadium shows. Cudi defended the move, calling Ye his brother, citing nearly 20 years of shared history, a sincere apology, and improved mental health. Attending and publicly endorsing the Yeezy Season 01 show extended that olive branch.
The show itself marked a deliberate reset. Models walked in circles around a large white sculptural mound inside a stark, cave-like white space instead of a traditional linear runway. Looks centered on military-inspired basics, combat boots, trenches, leather, and monochrome silhouettes. Ye previewed unreleased music as the soundtrack. Guests included Big Sean, 2 Chainz, designer Jerry Lorenzo, Ye’s wife Bianca Censori, and all four of Ye’s children with Kardashian. It was Ye’s first full runway presentation since the controversial 2022 Paris outing and came as the brand continued efforts to rebuild after the Adidas split and years of public backlash.
Cudi’s post-show Stories captured both the personal reconnection and an accidental camera effect that briefly outran the praise. The purple cherry is almost certainly everyday phone-sensor physics. The underlying relationship remains one of hip-hop’s longest-running cycles of collaboration, rupture, and repair.
