A Reddit user known as u/Just_a_fungi893 recovered a lost white Bose UC earbud from a patch of pale gravel with help from ChatGPT’s image analysis after roughly 10 minutes of unsuccessful searching by hand.
The incident occurred on a Friday evening in late October 2026 as the man left a park with his young son. Near the parking lot the child kept running despite being told to stop. The father sprinted after him. During the chase the earbud case slipped from the front pocket of his hoodie, struck the ground and burst open. The left earbud flew into a large area of white gravel.
The tiny white device blended with the similarly colored stones. With daylight fading, the father later wrote that there was “basically no way I’m going to find a tiny white earbud in a sea of white gravel, especially with the sun setting.” Bose earbuds of this type do not fully activate or connect until they detect they are inside an ear, limiting the usefulness of standard sound-based tracking.
After about 10 minutes of searching on his hands and knees he photographed the area and uploaded the first image to ChatGPT with the request: “Can you find my headphone? It’s a white Bose uc earbud.” The AI replied that it had zoomed in and scanned the gravel section by section but could not confidently identify the earbud. It noted a white-and-gray object near a reddish shrub that appeared to be a plant tag and asked for several closer photos taken with the camera pointed straight down so the smooth white plastic would stand out more clearly from the rocks.
The man sent the additional close-ups. Within less than a minute ChatGPT responded: “Found it! It’s in your third photo, toward the left side, slightly above the vertical midpoint. I can clearly see the smooth white earbud body and gray silicone piece nestled between the rocks. It’s roughly 10–12% of the way across the photo from the left edge and 44% down from the top… to the left of the reddish bush.” The chatbot also returned a marked version of the photo with a red circle and the label “EARBUD.”
The entire process of uploading photos, receiving guidance and locating the earbud took under five minutes. The father recovered the device and posted screenshots of the conversation on the r/ChatGPT subreddit. He wrote: “It didn’t even take five minutes, and I’ll be damned, it actually found it. I genuinely don’t think I ever would’ve found it without ChatGPT.” He added that he regularly uses the chatbot for many other tasks and that the idea of asking it for help had simply occurred to him in the moment.
The post quickly drew thousands of upvotes and was shared widely on X, including by the account Complex. Multiple news outlets reported the account, citing the Reddit screenshots and the user’s own description of events. Commenters noted the precision of the percentage-based location and discussed practical uses of multimodal AI for everyday lost-item problems while also cautioning that image models can occasionally produce inaccurate results that still require on-the-ground verification.
No full name, age, hometown or exact park location for the Reddit user has been publicly disclosed beyond the username u/Just_a_fungi893. The story rests on the user’s first-person account and the accompanying ChatGPT conversation screenshots that have circulated across platforms.
