GREENVILLE, S.C. — Actress Hayden Panettiere, best known for NBC’s Heroes and ABC’s Nashville, was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. on Aug. 16 at an apartment in the Judson Mill Lofts complex at 701 Easley Bridge Road in Greenville, South Carolina, after first responders found her in cardiac arrest and were unable to revive her with advanced life support, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office said.
Toxicology results are pending and could take up to 12 weeks, the coroner’s office said. An autopsy found no signs of trauma, and the Greenville Police Department’s preliminary findings indicated no foul play or suspicious circumstances.
Separately, multiple law enforcement sources told TMZ on Monday that investigators now believe a single oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl — purchased from a longtime dealer in Los Angeles — caused her death, and that the Drug Enforcement Administration is actively trying to trace the suspected fatal pill back to that supplier. The New York Post, Page Six, Radar Online and Local10.com independently reported the same account within hours, all attributing it to TMZ. Authorities have not publicly identified the alleged dealer, and no one has been charged in connection with supplying any substances.
Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother Zach Hickerson were present at the apartment, according to a CNN review of the police report. Zach Hickerson told TMZ that the pair found Panettiere unconscious, that he called 911, and that Brian administered Narcan, an opioid overdose antidote, before the brothers performed CPR until fire and EMS crews arrived. The Narcan did not reverse the effects.
The DEA has joined the investigation by the Greenville Police Department. Agents in Los Angeles and South Carolina are examining the source of any controlled substances involved, and Hickerson has met with DEA officials as part of the probe, USA Today reported. TMZ drew a parallel to the 2018 death of rapper Mac Miller, in which a federal drug dealer was convicted of supplying the artist with fentanyl-laced pills — a conviction the agency has used to justify similar supply-chain prosecutions since.
The news puts Panettiere’s own warnings in sharper focus. In her May 2026 memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, she detailed long struggles with substance abuse and postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter Kaya with boxer Wladimir Klitschko, as The New York Times noted in its review. The book also described a turbulent relationship with Hickerson that included multiple domestic violence arrests.
Hickerson, a South Carolina native who has worked in real estate, pleaded no contest in April 2021 to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend after a series of incidents between May 2019 and January 2020, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office. He was sentenced to 45 days in jail, four years of formal probation, 52 domestic violence classes, $500 in restitution and a five-year protective order, People magazine reported. Days before Panettiere’s death, a judge denied his motion to reduce the felony convictions to misdemeanors.
