Rising Chicago drill artist Mello Buckzz was taken into custody by police on June 15 and ordered held in Cook County Jail following her arrest on felony weapons charges.
Mello Buckzz, born Melanie U. Doyle and age 25, was pulled over around 10 p.m. in the 1900 block of South Rockwell Street on the city’s West Side. Officers stopped the black 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV she was driving due to an obstructed or illegally tinted windshield, according to police and court records.
During the stop, authorities observed marijuana in her purse and a small open bottle of vodka in the vehicle. When ordered to exit the car, Doyle allegedly became uncooperative and resisted arrest, prompting officers to call a supervising sergeant. After approximately 15 minutes, she was physically removed from the driver’s seat. Officers then spotted the barrel of a handgun under the driver’s seat.
Police recovered a loaded Glock 43X with one round in the chamber and additional ammunition. The firearm had been reported stolen from the southwest suburb of Bedford Park. Doyle did not have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card or concealed carry license, officials said.
She faces a felony charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, along with two counts of resisting or obstructing a peace officer, plus citations for driving with an obstructed windshield and transporting open alcohol. Doyle was booked into Cook County Jail on June 16 and ordered held following her initial court appearance. She has a next court date scheduled for July.
From jail, the rapper posted on Instagram on June 19, thanking supporters and teasing her upcoming project Pretty Opp, which was slated to drop on June 26.
The arrest comes nearly one year after a tragic drive-by shooting outside Artis Restaurant and Lounge in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. The incident occurred immediately following a release party for Doyle’s HollyHOOD mixtape/EP in July 2025, leaving four people dead and 14 others wounded. Police described the attack as targeted, and one of the victims was a close friend of the artist. Doyle has not been linked by authorities to any involvement in that shooting.
Mello Buckzz has gained traction in the Chicago drill scene with tracks like “Move” and collaborations that have earned her placements on Billboard’s new R&B/hip-hop song roundups. The latest incident has sparked discussion on social media, with fans using the hashtag #FreeMelloBuckzz while some question details of the traffic stop.
The case remains ongoing.
