Seattle Link Light Rail Suspended After Car on Tracks at Mt. Baker Station

A 70-year-old Utah woman followed her GPS onto elevated light rail tracks Tuesday evening, halting Seattle’s Link 1 Line service just as thousands of Mariners fans poured out of T-Mobile Park.

The red SUV became stuck on the guideway at Mount Baker Station, roughly 30 to 35 feet above street level, shutting down trains between Stadium Station and Othello Station starting around 6:15 p.m. Riders scrambled for buses, rideshares, and other options in heavy post-game traffic. Service resumed about two hours later, though delays lingered as the system recovered.

Seattle Fire and Sound Transit crews quickly cut power to the tracks, then used heavy equipment to lift the vehicle off the rails. The driver climbed out on her own and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. She was in stable condition, and no one else was hurt.

Witnesses said the woman told them she had simply been following directions on her phone. Sound Transit is now investigating how she managed to drive onto the restricted elevated structure in the first place.

The timing couldn’t have been worse. The disruption hit right as fans left the Mariners’ game against the New York Mets, turning what should have been a straightforward trip home into a chaotic search for alternatives. For a city that has poured billions into expanding its light rail network to reduce traffic and connect neighborhoods, the incident exposed a basic vulnerability: keeping cars off tracks that sit high above city streets.

Sound Transit has not yet said exactly how the SUV gained access or what safeguards may need strengthening. Officials say they will review physical barriers, signage, and detection systems around elevated stations. While GPS mix-ups cause occasional strange incidents on roads and rails nationwide, allowing a passenger vehicle to travel any meaningful distance on active tracks points to a potential gap in protection.
