Tragic Texas Toddler Death: Dresser Tipped, Crushing 2-Year-Old Girl

A 2-year-old girl from the Sanger/Denton area of Texas died on January 8, 2026, after an 80-pound antique dresser fell on her while she was climbing its open drawers to reach a toy, authorities and family confirmed.

Helena Harlow Cochran was just days away from turning three when the incident occurred at her family’s home. According to her mother, the heavy piece of furniture tipped over suddenly and quietly as the toddler used the open drawers like steps — a common but dangerous behavior among curious young children.

Taryn Cochran, 21, shared the devastating details publicly in the weeks following the tragedy, hoping to raise awareness about furniture tip-over hazards. In an emotional social media post, the grieving mother expressed overwhelming guilt while urging other parents to take preventive action.

“The guilt and shame has all but consumed me, knowing that if I had taken the precautions of anchoring this dresser, my baby would still be here,” Taryn wrote. “It was so unexpected and not something I would’ve ever thought about being a threat, because of how large and heavy that dresser was.”

She added: “It happened so quickly and so silently, and our lives changed forever. I wanted to share my pain in losing my daughter from a mistake I made so that others are more cautious and aware that this very tragedy is so real.”

Taryn emphasized that anchoring heavy furniture is a simple step that takes only minutes but can prevent fatal accidents. “I cannot express enough how important it is to secure every piece of furniture you can, especially dressers,” she said. “Anchoring takes only a small amount of time but can make all the difference in the world. If my story can help even one family avoid this kind of tragedy, then my daughter’s memory is protecting others in a way that truly matters.”

The family had owned the antique dresser for years with no previous stability issues. Helena is survived by her mother Taryn, stepfather Eric Archer, and younger sister Soryn. Graveside services were held on January 15, 2026, at Bolivar Cemetery near Sanger.

Furniture tip-overs remain a documented danger for toddlers, with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reporting thousands of emergency room visits and multiple deaths each year from unsecured dressers, chests, and other heavy furniture. Safety advocates stress that wall anchors or straps are effective and inexpensive tools for prevention, particularly in homes with young children.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family with grief counseling, therapy, and caring for their surviving child.

Helena was remembered in her obituary as a joyful, spirited little girl who loved deeply and was rarely seen without her Minnie Mouse stuffed animal.
