In a fiery post on Truth Social, Trump slammed Chicago as “the worst and most dangerous city in the world,” blasting Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s leadership. He vowed to deploy the National Guard to “solve the crime problem fast,” pointing to his August 2025 federal takeover of Washington, D.C.’s police, which he claims slashed violent crime by 45%.
Weeks earlier, on August 22, Trump had signaled Chicago as the next target for a federal crackdown, calling the city “a mess.”Chicago’s leaders fired back. Mayor Brandon Johnson called Trump’s plan “uncoordinated and uncalled for,” highlighting a 31% drop in homicides and 39% drop in shootings in 2025 compared to 2024. On August 30, Johnson signed an executive order, “Protecting Chicago,” directing city agencies to resist federal military involvement.
Governor Pritzker denounced the idea as “unconstitutional” and told Trump to “stay out,” suggesting more FBI or ATF agents instead. Local pastor Donovan Price urged focus on community programs, saying, “We know what our city needs.”Despite the weekend’s violence, Chicago’s crime trends are improving.
