Young Thug has been thrust back into the spotlight this week after a 2015 police interrogation video resurfaced, drawing fresh scrutiny over his role in the infamous Lil Wayne tour bus shooting case. The footage, which shows the Atlanta rapper allegedly name-dropping associate Jimmy “Peewee Roscoe” Winfrey during questioning, reignited heated debate online about loyalty, cooperation, and survival in hip-hop culture.
The two-hour video, originally leaked nearly two years ago but now resurfaced on August 26, 2025, shows Thug being questioned by police while in custody. At the time, he had been arrested on terroristic threat charges after allegedly threatening a mall security guard. Still, investigators used the session to press him about the April 2015 shooting involving Lil Wayne’s tour bus.
In the recording, Thug spoke about Winfrey while denying his own involvement. At one point, he told officers:
“This motherf**** Wayne from New Orleans. I’m from Atlanta. This n**** was in Atlanta and I was in New Orleans… They said Roscoe did it. I don’t wanna block out y’all case by saying Roscoe ain’t do that s***. There’s no one Roscoe? Man, that man a f***** scrub… I don’t know. I honestly don’t know.”*
The footage also included Thug saying Winfrey “used to carry Lil Wayne’s drugs.”
Following the renewed circulation of the video, Thug quickly addressed the backlash. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:
“They didn’t play my interrogation video in court cause I helped my brada #Ratwhere?”
The controversy stems from an April 26, 2015, incident when Lil Wayne’s tour bus was shot at while traveling on I-285 in Cobb County, Georgia. Prosecutors alleged that Winfrey, driving a white Camaro, pulled alongside the bus and opened fire, causing over $20,000 in damage. No injuries were reported.
Winfrey, who had ties to both Young Thug’s YSL crew and Birdman’s Cash Money Records, was arrested and initially pleaded guilty to charges connected to the shooting. However, in 2018, the Georgia Supreme Court overturned his conviction after finding that a trial judge had improperly intervened in plea negotiations.
Phone records from the night of the shooting showed Thug called Winfrey eight times in the 12 minutes leading up to the incident. Winfrey later called a number belonging to Birdman, and a leaked phone call captured Birdman telling him: “It’s time for you to come out here and get your money, man… Strictly business, man.”
In December 2024, Winfrey reached a new plea deal, pleading guilty to RICO, gun, and drug charges in the ongoing YSL case. He was sentenced to 10 years with credit for time served and eight years of probation, while his gang charge was dismissed.
The resurfaced video sparked immediate comparisons to Thug’s handling of Gunna’s Alford plea in the YSL RICO case back in December 2022. Fans were quick to highlight what they saw as double standards.
“Young Thug ratted and he went so hard on Gunna despite him not doing anything against him,” one user wrote. Another added: “Not mad at the video. Mad at the fact you disowned your brother Gunna over doing what he had to do.”
The timing of the leak has also drawn attention. In the ongoing YSL RICO trial, witness Kenneth “Lil Woody” Copeland recently accused prosecutors of leaking his own interrogation tapes after he stopped cooperating. Copeland admitted he lied to police about Thug’s involvement in 2015, raising further questions about the case.
