A viral video capturing a woman’s emotional plea to a group of homeless men to return her allegedly stolen iPhone has sparked heated online debates about crime, homelessness, and progressive ideals in Portland, Oregon. The video, taken by controversial independent reporter Kevin Dahlgren, documents the “liberal activist” struggling with the personal costs of her politics, generating an ensuing blaze of discourse throughout the media and social media.
The confrontation occurred in November of 2024 at an intersection outside of a Portland bus stop, when an unnamed woman approached an assembly of homeless men that she suspected of swiping her iPhone. In the video, credited to photographer Tara Faul and shared by Dahlgren on X, the woman is visibly distraught, tearfully pleading,
“If you pilfered it from rich scum, go ahead, keep it and sell it, but I’m, like, basically a good person.”
She put out an offer, insisting,
“If you guys recover my iPhone, I will reward you with more than. Like, I’m an honest person.”
The phone still wasn’t returned despite her attempts.
The woman also refused to call the police, citing systemic issues. She told Dahlgren,
“It wasn’t their fault. Capitalism drove them to be homeless, addicts, and to steal.”
Her statements, which align with some progressive harm-reduction views, became a focal point of the viral video, amplifying its reach and sparking polarized reactions.
Dahlgren’s post to X, which he made on November 22, 2024, went viral quickly, with high-traffic accounts such as @CollinRugg and @MarioNawfal amplifying it. Rugg referred to the woman as “total clown,” while Nawfal called it her getting
“a taste of what she stands for.”
The video accumulated thousands of likes and retweets, with many users ridiculing the irony of her fate. The post labeled it a “meltdown” or “poetic justice,” pointing out the hypocrisy of her crime stance, according to the critics.
News media such as the Daily Mail, Canada Free Press, and VidMax.com picked up the news, highlighting the emotional state of the woman and quotations of her use of the term “rich scum.” The media framed the episode as an emblem of cultural flashpoint, capturing overall frustrations with Portland’s homelessness, addiction, and crime issues.
The journalist behind the video, Kevin Dahlgren, is controversial in Portland. Skilled at reporting on urban problems, he commands a large following online but is criticized for preying upon vulnerable groups. In 2025, Dahlgren pleaded guilty to first-degree theft, aggravated identity theft, and official misconduct relating to his earlier work as a homeless services specialist in Gresham, Oregon. Dahlgren is sentenced to five days in jail, five years of probation, and required to make $16,511 in restitution. Such critics as activist Morgan Godvin condemn him for creating “misery porn” for clout, while others see him as a whistleblower revealing failings in progressive homeless policy.
The incident unfolded amid growing public frustration in Portland over homelessness and crime. Downtown businesses, including REI and Nike, have closed locations due to safety concerns, with some describing the area as “dystopian.” In November 2024, Portland elected Keith Wilson as mayor, who campaigned on increasing shelter capacity and addressing unsheltered homelessness. The woman’s refusal to involve the police and her comments about capitalism reflect divisive progressive views, such as defund-the-police movements, which have fueled debates in urban politics.
The video’s virality underscores how social media can amplify personal incidents into ideological battlegrounds. While the woman’s identity and activist status remain unverified, her emotional plea and Dahlgren’s framing as a “pro-crime liberal” struck a chord with critics of progressive policies. Yet, the incident also raises ethical questions about filming and sharing someone’s distress without consent, particularly by a figure like Dahlgren, whose credibility is tainted by legal troubles.
