Rapper YNW Melly, born Jamell Demons, remains behind bars following a pivotal court appearance Tuesday, as Judge Martin Fine postponed a decision on whether to grant the artist bond ahead of his upcoming murder retrial. Despite hopeful remarks from Melly’s mother and family, court officials indicated that a final ruling is not expected for several days.
The hearing, held on May 6 at the Broward County courthouse, marked the latest development in a case gripping both the legal and entertainment worlds. Melly has been incarcerated for nearly six years, awaiting trial on charges of first-degree murder in connection with the 2018 deaths of Christopher Thomas Jr. and Anthony Williams—both close friends and collaborators in the YNW Collective.
Melly’s defense team used the hearing to urge Judge Fine to authorize pretrial release, citing the rapper’s mistrial in 2023 and his willingness to comply with stringent bond conditions. Defense lawyers proposed a comprehensive plan that included house arrest, GPS monitoring, and 24/7 private security. They also revealed that Melly’s record label is prepared to finance any bond amount deemed appropriate by the court.
“He’s been through a lot these last six years,”
Said a family representative, who described Melly’s time in jail as deeply difficult.
“We are really hopeful today that he’s going to get a bond and be able to come home.”
Melly’s mother echoed that optimism during a livestream following the hearing, telling followers,
“He could get a bond any minute now.”
The prosecution, however, presented a starkly different narrative. Citing the capital nature of the charges and accusations that Melly attempted to tamper with witnesses while incarcerated, state attorneys argued forcefully against release. They introduced ballistic evidence and cell phone data, which, they claim, place Melly at the scene of the killings.
In a moving statement during the hearing, an attorney representing the family of victim Anthony Williams expressed strong opposition to any bond. The victims’ families, the attorney emphasized, continue to seek justice and closure.
After more than 2,000 days in pretrial detention, his defense argues that the prolonged incarceration has taken a severe emotional and psychological toll, bolstering their case for monitored release. If convicted in his retrial, set for September 2025, Melly could face the death penalty.
