The nation is reeling after conservative activist Charlie Kirk, 31, was fatally shot during a rally in Utah this week — and now, authorities say the suspect is in custody after an extraordinary twist involving his own father.
Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Washington, Utah, was arrested late Thursday night following a dramatic 33-hour manhunt. According to officials, Robinson confessed to the shooting to his father, Matt Robinson, a 27-year veteran of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. Matt then made the heart-wrenching decision to turn his son in.
Gov. Spencer Cox confirmed Friday that a family member contacted authorities after Robinson admitted, or strongly implied, that he was responsible. “This was a family member doing the right thing,” Cox said.
President Donald Trump broke the news of Robinson’s capture during a Friday morning Fox News interview.
“I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him,” Trump told Fox & Friends during a live interview in Manhattan. “Somebody who was very close to him turned him in,” he added, later revealing it was Robinson’s father, Matt, a veteran sheriff’s deputy, who contacted law enforcement through a minister.
“I hope he’s going to be found guilty, and I hope he gets the death penalty,” Trump said. “Charlie Kirk was the finest person, and he didn’t deserve this.”
The Shooting
On Wednesday, Sept. 10, Kirk — the co-founder of Turning Point USA and a close Trump ally — spoke to a crowd of about 3,000 at Utah Valley University in Orem. He was in the middle of a Q&A session when a single shot rang out around 12:20 p.m. Witnesses say Kirk collapsed instantly.

Investigators later revealed the shot was fired from the rooftop of a nearby building, striking Kirk in the neck from more than 140 yards away. Surveillance footage shows Robinson arriving on campus in a gray Dodge Challenger shortly before noon, then climbing to the roof.

Disturbing Details
Authorities say he fled the scene, leaving behind the rifle used in the killing, which was later recovered by the FBI wrapped in a towel. The weapon, along with footprints, palm prints, and engraved bullet casings, tied Robinson directly to the shooting.
Troubling Messages and Writings
Robinson’s roommate turned over Discord messages to investigators that appeared to show the young man planning the attack. In the chats, he allegedly discussed retrieving the rifle from a hiding spot and even engraving bullets with strange and provocative phrases.
Some of those engravings were recovered at the scene — including taunts like “Hey fascist! CATCH!” and a reference to Bella Ciao, an Italian anti-fascist song. One casing even included a meme-like phrase: “If you read this, you are GAY Lmao.”
Who Is Tyler Robinson?
Family members describe Robinson as someone who has grown increasingly political recently, often making critical comments about Kirk. At a family dinner before the shooting, one relative recalled Robinson saying Kirk was “full of hate and spreading hate.”
Robinson briefly attended Utah State University in 2021 but dropped out after one semester. He has been living with his parents in a six-bedroom home in Washington, Utah. His mother works in disability services, while his father has spent nearly three decades in law enforcement.

Despite his radicalization, the Robinsons’ social media painted a picture of a seemingly ordinary family life — with photos of vacations, birthdays, and celebrations alongside his two younger brothers.
Photos from his mother’s social media painted a jarring contrast: a grinning young man once praised as a “genius” when accepted into college poses alongside his siblings on vacations. Other images, however, show him experimenting with military-style weapons, including a rocket launcher.
A Family Torn Apart
Robinson’s father, Matt, a 27-year veteran of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, reportedly urged his son to surrender after recognizing him in FBI photos. When Tyler confessed, Matt drove him to police headquarters in St. George.
The family lives in a six-bedroom home more than 250 miles from Orem. Tyler’s mother, Amber, works in disability services.
National Response
The FBI acted quickly, processing more than 7,000 tips and 200 interviews before Robinson was captured within 33 hours of the shooting. A $100,000 reward had been offered for information leading to his arrest.
Gov. Cox called the killing a “political assassination” and “an attack on the American experiment.” Trump, who described Kirk as “a patriot and a hero,” announced Kirk would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously. He also said he hopes Robinson will face the death penalty.
On Thursday, Kirk’s casket was transported to Arizona aboard Air Force Two, with Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance accompanying his family. Both Vance and Trump are expected to attend Kirk’s funeral next weekend.
Trump, visibly emotional, mourned Kirk in a Truth Social post, writing: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie.”
In a later video, the president called Kirk’s death a “heinous assassination” and said the activist is now a “martyr for truth and freedom.”
Kirk leaves behind his wife, Erika Frantzve, a former Miss Arizona, and their two young children.
“This is a dark day for our state. It’s a tragic day for our nation,” Gov. Cox said. “I want to be very clear — this was a political assassination.”
