A nation is shaken by a crime rampage as 22-year-old Damien McDaniel is charged with committing 14 murders in 14 months. McDaniel is charged with a killing rampage from July 2023 through September 2024 that claimed a firefighter, a UPS driver, and a series of additional victims, as well as two mass shooting victims. The series of reported killings began in July 2023 with Birmingham firefighter Jordan Melton having been shot at a fire station. Sergeant Jamal Jones, a firefighter as well, was also shot but survived. McDaniel is suspected.

Violence escalated in September 2024 with a second mass shooting at Birmingham’s entertainment district at Five Points South at Hush Lounge. The September 21 assault took the lives of four people and wounded 17. McDaniel is also attributed by authorities with two additional deadly shootings on September 19 and 22.
Police worked around the clock piecing together clues that tied McDaniel with a series of murders. The 2024 arrest brought relief in a case that had placed Birmingham in a state of terror. McDaniel as of January 2025 has pleaded not guilty on multiple charges of capital murder as well as on aggravated assault. The defense attorney, John Robbins, observed that a fair trial is warranted as defense attorneys are not in a position to examine all the evidence.
McDaniel’s offenses accounted for nearly 8.6% of Birmingham’s violent death count in 2024.
