A family baptism party ended tragically when a 19-year-old man fatally shot his 35-year-old family member after a heated encounter at a private residence in the Dallas suburb of Balch Springs on July 27, 2025.
The victim was celebrating the baptism of his newborn baby with relatives and friends when violence broke out shortly after midnight. Montes had accused Leonardo Asis Campos Torres, a 19-year-old family relative, of firing reckless gunshots beside his Chevrolet Tahoe earlier that evening, and challenged Campos after accusing him of the crime.

Witnesses report the dispute soon became a physical confrontation. During the altercation, Torres pulled out a 9mm pistol and fired at Montes several times. Authorities verified Montes was shot in the chest and the back and questioned the trajectory of the confrontation. He was pronounced dead at the scene, where officers also recovered several shell casings near the Tahoe.
“This was supposed to be a night of joy for the family. Now they’re dealing with unimaginable loss.”
One Balch Springs neighbor told reporters.
At the incident scene, police arrested Torres after witnesses identified him as the shooter. His mugshot was made public by Dallas County Jail and showed a bloodied and battered man with swelling and lacerations on the face. When his Miranda rights were read to him, Torres admitted shooting but claimed it was in self-defense.
“Leonardo stated that he was assaulted by Cristian and other relatives before he drew his weapon,”
Investigators wrote in the arrest affidavit.
Torres has been charged with murder and is currently being held at Dallas County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
The killing has deeply unsettled Balch Springs, a city of about 27,000 residents where family gatherings such as baptisms are common cultural milestones. Many community members took to social media to express grief, while others debated the role of firearms at private celebrations.
“This shouldn’t have happened at a baptism. Guns and family parties just don’t mix.”
Said another resident.
Violent assault spotlights broader trend. Texas Department of Public Safety statistics show that at the statewide level, more than 30% of homicide cases are domestic or family conflict-related. FBI crime data further show that in Balch Springs alone, roughly 1 of every 35 citizens falls victim each year to a violent crime, higher than the national average.
The tragedy has already caused uproar about the Texas Castle Doctrine that allows citizens to use deadly force if they believe they are under immediate danger. Commentators have reported that medical examiners confirmed that Montes was fired on from the back, and that may have suggested that he was falling or turning when at least a bullet hit him.
“This detail could undermine the self-defense claim,”
explained a Dallas-based legal analyst.
“If the victim was retreating, it becomes harder to argue that deadly force was necessary.”
Instances like these have split Texans previously. When a Dallas man fatally shot his brother-in-law at a domestic confrontation in 2023 and claimed self-defense, the man was not indicted. Prosecutors dismissed the charges, stating that jurors would not convict on the basis of the Castle Doctrine. Others have had their arguments dismissed when forensic evidence indicated the use of excess force.
Gun violence remains a significant issue across Texas. Texas’ firearm homicide rate was 5.2 per 100,000 persons in 2023, and it was one of the top rates in the country, based on data from the CDC.
Family tragedies like the shooting at Balch Springs stoke perennial debates about gun safety when irresponsible or celebratory gunfire is involved. Social media has amplified the tone of the debate with some rallying around the right of Torres to defend himself and others highlighting the senselessness of bringing guns within family gatherings.
When it goes to trial, district attorneys will couple eyewitness accounts with forensic evidence. It might all depend on whether or not jurors will believe him that he was assaulted or if the gunshots and especially the gunshot wound to the back of Montes can have some other explanation.
For now, a family that came together to attend their child’s baptism is left mourning a loss of their dad. It is just one more senseless illustration of how immediate arguments can become fatal and irreparable when guns are involved.
