12-year-old Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel from Houston, Texas, has turned personal hardship into a nationwide inspiration. Diagnosed with terminal brain and spinal cancer at age 6, DJ has endured 13 surgeries and countless challenges. Yet, this young fighter’s spirit remains unbreakable, fueled by a dream to become a police officer—a dream sparked in 2017 when law enforcement officers helped his family during Hurricane Harvey.
DJ’s mission goes beyond personal ambition. It’s a tribute to his late friend, Abigail Arias, a 7-year-old who lost her battle with lung cancer in 2019 after being sworn in as an honorary officer. Inspired by her legacy, DJ set out to be sworn in by 100 law enforcement agencies while raising awareness for childhood cancer. What started as a modest goal exploded into something extraordinary.
By October 2024, he’d been honored by over 871 agencies—not just across the U.S. but worldwide, including the Italian Royal Carabinieri Corps. One memorable moment came when the Birmingham Police Department swore him in, joining 33 other agencies in a powerful ceremony.
DJ’s path hasn’t been smooth. Last year, social media buzzed with claims that he was harassed and mocked by a group of people over his police uniform. Posts about the alleged incident spread online (see one example on X), but no verified reports or official sources have confirmed it happened. True or not, DJ didn’t let it dim his light. His focus stayed on his mission, and his smile was as bright as ever.
On March 4, 2025, DJ’s journey reached an incredible milestone. During President Donald Trump’s address to Congress, U.S. Secret Service Director Sean Curran stepped forward to present DJ with an honorary badge, officially naming him an honorary Secret Service agent. The moment broadcast to millions, was a testament to DJ’s courage and the lives he’s touched.
“This badge isn’t just for me,”
DJ said afterward.
“It’s for all the kids fighting cancer who need to know they’re not alone.”
Behind DJ stands his father, Theodis Daniel, who’s traveled with him across the country, from small-town police stations to international ceremonies. The Houston community has rallied too, raising funds through efforts like a GoFundMe campaign in August 2024 to send DJ to New York (Houston Style Magazine).
“DJ teaches us to keep going, no matter what,”
Theodis said.
“He’s my hero.”
