World Record Pig Sold for $505,000 in Texas

A Texas teen is making headlines after his championship pig fetched a record-breaking price at one of the country’s biggest livestock events.

On Friday (March 20), 13-year-old Landry Mabry sold his Grand Champion Junior Market Barrow for $505,000 at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, marking the highest price ever paid for a pig at the event and surpassing last year’s $220,000 record.

Mabry, representing the Crawford FFA chapter in Oglesby, Texas, was seen celebrating in the show ring as the final bid was announced, with the moment quickly spreading across social media. The clip—originally shared by the rodeo’s official account—captured applause from the crowd as the teenager stood beside his prize animal.

Despite the eye-popping number, the sale reflects a long-standing tradition rather than a typical market transaction. In standard agricultural markets, pigs of similar size usually sell for just a few hundred dollars. At youth auctions like Houston’s, however, bids are driven by corporate sponsors, donors and industry leaders who treat purchases as philanthropic contributions.

Only a portion of the total goes directly to the student. Grand champion exhibitors typically receive a guaranteed payout—in this case around $45,000—while the remaining funds are directed toward scholarship programs and educational initiatives tied to organizations like FFA and 4-H.

The animals themselves also follow a different path than standard livestock. Instead of being processed for meat, top-winning entries are often returned to their exhibitors, used for breeding or kept for promotional purposes.

Mabry’s sale is one of several headline-making moments from this year’s rodeo, where junior livestock auctions have continued to draw major bids across categories including lambs, goats and steers.

Online, reactions to the sale have ranged from amazement to humor, with many users referencing “some pig” from Charlotte’s Web, while others questioned how such high-dollar bids are structured. Supporters were quick to point out the charitable model behind the auction, emphasizing its role in funding education for young participants.

For Mabry, the milestone marks a major achievement—and a significant step toward future academic opportunities—while spotlighting the broader impact of youth agricultural programs in Texas.
