Authorities in Broward County are asking for the public’s help after newly released surveillance footage revealed a violent assault on a 70-year-old woman aboard a Broward County Transit bus last month.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) released the video on Nov. 21, hoping it would lead to the identification of the woman seen attacking the passenger. The suspect, who was carrying several bags and wearing dark clothing, was last seen fleeing the bus in Lauderdale Lakes. As of Friday evening, no arrests had been made.
According to BSO, the incident began on Oct. 21 when the victim, seated in the bus’s ADA priority section, asked a standing passenger for some space after being bumped multiple times. The request escalated into an argument.
Deputies say the confrontation quickly turned physical. The attacker allegedly body-slammed the seated woman several times before striking her with a grocery bag. When the victim tried to protect herself with her cane, the woman reportedly punched her repeatedly in the head.
Other passengers eventually stepped in and separated the women. The bus driver pulled over near the 4100 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard, where the attacker — along with another woman she had been traveling with — fled the scene.
The victim suffered bruising to her forehead but chose not to go to the hospital. “Fortunately the victim did not suffer any major injuries — she was treated on scene,” BSO spokesperson Carey Codd said.
The video gained rapid attention after being shared on Friday by a widely followed account on X (formerly Twitter). It drew tens of thousands of views within hours and prompted hundreds of reactions.
Many users expressed shock and anger over the attack, while others used the incident to raise concerns about public transit safety and bystander inaction. Some comments included unverified claims and racially charged language, a pattern often seen when crime footage goes viral.
BSO’s Violent Crimes Unit continues to review evidence and interview witnesses. Detective Andres Lopez is leading the investigation.

BSO spokesperson Carey Codd called the assault “repulsive” and “absolutely unacceptable,” adding that investigators are hopeful someone will come forward after viewing the footage.
