A major fire broke out at Amsterdam’s historic Vondelkerk in the early hours of New Year’s Day, severely damaging the 154-year-old neo-Gothic landmark that has long served as a cultural and live events venue in the city.
Emergency services were first alerted shortly before 1 a.m. on Jan. 1, less than an hour after New Year’s Eve celebrations concluded. By the time firefighters arrived, flames had already spread through the church’s tower, sending thick smoke into the sky above the Vondelpark area. Despite hours of firefighting efforts, the blaze intensified, ultimately causing the complete collapse of the tower and significant structural failure across the roof and upper sections of the building.
Authorities declared the incident a significant fire and raised the alert level to “Grip 2,” activating a regional emergency response that brought in additional crews from outside Amsterdam. An NL-Alert was issued to residents just before 2 a.m., advising people in the area to stay indoors and shut windows and ventilation systems due to heavy smoke.
The fire sparked widespread disruption in the surrounding neighborhood. Burning embers from the historic wooden structure were carried eastward by the wind, while power was cut to approximately 90 nearby homes. Residents in surrounding buildings were evacuated as a precaution, with streets around the church cordoned off as firefighters went door to door to ensure public safety. Evacuees were temporarily sheltered in a nearby yoga studio.
No injuries were reported, and city officials confirmed that Vondelpark itself was not affected. Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema visited the scene overnight, describing the blaze as “a very intense and terrible fire in this monumental church,” and stressing that the safety of residents remained the city’s top priority.
Built between 1872 and 1880 by the renowned Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers — whose portfolio also includes Amsterdam Central Station and the Rijksmuseum — the Vondelkerk was originally a Roman Catholic church before it closed in 1977. In recent decades, the building was repurposed as a cultural space, hosting concerts, exhibitions, and creative businesses, making it a familiar venue within Amsterdam’s music and arts community.
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed. While some residents suggested fireworks may have entered the church tower during New Year’s Eve celebrations, fire officials said the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities have since stated that the historic structure cannot be saved and remains at risk of further collapse. The destruction of the Vondelkerk marks the loss of a significant cultural venue and architectural landmark, raising renewed questions around fire safety for historic buildings during large-scale celebrations.
