Robinson faces charges of aggravated murder after police arrested him late Thursday in St. George, ending a tense two-day manhunt following Kirk’s fatal shooting on Wednesday at Utah Valley University. Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, was speaking to a crowd of about 3,000 people when a single bullet struck him in the neck during an outdoor event in Orem, roughly 260 miles north of Robinson’s hometown in Washington, Utah.
Just hours after Robinson’s capture, the evacuation kicked off Friday afternoon when officers received “concerning information” linked directly to the area near the family’s six-bedroom residence in a quiet middle-class suburb. A police helicopter circled overhead as law enforcement cleared out residents and media crews, with one reporter noting the sudden order came while they prepared to broadcast live from the scene.
Investigators have not shared details on the exact nature of the information. Still, the response suggests they took no chances in securing the site, where a gray Dodge Challenger—believed to be the one Robinson drove to the university—remained parked in the driveway. The home belongs to Robinson’s parents, Matt, a construction worker, and Amber, a care worker, who raised him in a Republican-leaning Mormon family alongside two younger brothers.
Family members told police that Robinson had grown more vocal about politics in recent years and expressed a strong dislike for Kirk during a dinner chat, calling him someone who spread hate. He registered to vote without party affiliation but skipped the last two elections, and records show no prior criminal history or military ties. Robinson briefly studied pre-engineering at Utah State University in 2021 and later joined an electrical apprenticeship at Dixie Technical College in St. George.
Bullet casings recovered near the shooting site carried anti-fascist engravings, like “Hey fascist! Catch!” and lyrics from an Italian resistance song, pointing to possible motives tied to online extremism. Officials recovered a high-powered rifle wrapped in a towel from bushes close to the campus, matching descriptions from messages on Robinson’s phone via the Discord app. Discord later removed an account linked to him but said it found no evidence of planning violence there.
Robinson’s father spotted him in FBI photos released during the manhunt. He urged him to turn himself in after a confession, with help from a family friend who alerted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. He now sits in Utah County Jail without bail, with formal charges set for Tuesday and a virtual court appearance the same day. Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced plans to seek the death penalty. At the same time, President Donald Trump praised the quick arrest and called Charlie Kirk a “legendary” figure, hoping for the harshest punishment for the killer of Charlie Kirk.
