Twilight Saga Becomes a Television Series

A remake of the Twilight Movie Turn Series in the Works

Hot on the heels of Disney Plus’ announcement that it’s transforming Percy Jackson into a television series and HBO’s recent news that they’re turning Harry Potter into a series, Twilight is becoming another book-turned-movie franchise getting the TV treatment. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio that owns the Twilight Saga is in early development on a television series.

The TV version will likely have writer Stephenie Meyer involved, sources tell USA TODAY, and it’s also expected to focus on the first four books of the series. A person familiar with the project but not authorized to speak publicly says the series is being developed at Lionsgate, which owns the rights to the books and films.

Meyer’s original books have been criticized for their misogyny and the realism of their depictions of teenage girls. The characters’ courtships often feel too controlling, with Bella (Kristen Stewart) swept off her feet by Edward (Robert Pattinson), who is devoted to her protection and loves to stalk her while she sleeps.

While the books and movies are wildly popular, their low-stakes, sprawling nature isn’t conducive to serialized drama. Most conflicts are resolved quickly and off-screen, and no significant action scenes exist.

Recasting new actors in the roles will likely be difficult, but a few of the cast members from the films are expected to return. The most controversial is Jacob (Taylor Lautner), who is portrayed as a white werewolf whose powers come from his Quileute heritage, but it’s possible that Meyer could change this aspect of the books.
