It’s hard to even wrap your head around something like this a mom in Texas losing her three little boys in a frozen pond during this nasty winter storm that’s been hammering the country. Cheyenne Hangaman is going through hell right now after her sons, Howard who was just 6, Kaleb at 8, and EJ who was 9, slipped under the ice on a private pond up near Bonham, Texas, back on January 26, 2026. Bonham’s this small town about 70 miles northeast of Dallas in Fannin County, and the whole place is shattered by what happened.

The storm had already shut down schools in the Bonham Independent School District that day it was too dangerous with all the ice and cold. The family was crashing at a friend’s place across from the pond off Recreational Road #3, just north of town. Cheyenne had told the kids to steer clear of the water, but you know how boys that age can be they snuck out to play anyway. From what she said, little Howard fell through first, trying to pretend he was ice skating on the thin layer. Then Kaleb and EJ jumped right in to try and pull him out.
“They were just screaming, telling me to help them,”
Cheyenne told reporters in a heartbreaking chat. She bolted over there and dove into the freezing water herself.
“I tried to fight for my kids’ lives… I had to watch them struggle and drown, and I couldn’t help them,”
She said.
“It was one of me and three of them, and they all needed me at once. I just couldn’t… I couldn’t save them.”
A neighbor nearby heard the chaos and tossed her a rope to haul her out, probably saving her life. By then, first responders were on the scene Bonham Fire Department divers, local police, Fannin County Sheriff’s folks, Texas Game Wardens, you name it. They got the two older boys out first, did CPR, and rushed them to TMC Bonham Hospital. Howard took longer to find; the divers had to search hard before recovering him. Sadly, despite everything, all three didn’t make it.
These kids weren’t just names in a story they were full of energy and personality. EJ was all about football and keeping his hair looking sharp. Kaleb had this sweet side, always dancing and singing. Howard was the goofy one, cracking everyone up wherever he went. They went to elementary school in Bonham ISD, and now the whole school is trying to cope. Superintendent Lance Hamlin put it plainly:
“This is an unimaginable loss,”
And they’re bringing in counselors for the kids and teachers.
Cheyenne’s got six kids in total, and she called these boys her everything. The community stepped up quick people like John Ramsey, the athletic director and football coach at Bonham ISD, who actually helped at the scene. Folks have started fundraisers, including a GoFundMe, to help the family out.
Texas doesn’t get freezes like this often, but this storm in January 2026 dropped temps low enough to ice over ponds though not thick enough to hold anyone. Experts say even a couple inches can give way, and hypothermia hits fast in water that cold. The CDC notes about 1,000 kids drown each year in the U.S., with little ones under 9 being especially at risk, particularly if they’re not watched closely near water. And with weird weather patterns from climate change, these winter mishaps are popping up more, according to stuff in journals like Injury Prevention.
In a spot like Bonham where cold snaps are rare, people might not think twice about the dangers. Safety folks recommend at least 4 inches of ice before anyone steps on it, and always keep an eye on the kids.
The Sheriff’s Office called it a “terrible accident” with no signs of anything suspicious. “Our hearts go out to the family,” they said. Bonham ISD is all about supporting everyone through this. It’s got people talking about better warnings during storms, and how communities can pull together in a crisis even if it wasn’t enough to save those boys this time.
This whole thing just drives home how fragile life is, especially with weather going haywire these days. A simple afternoon playing outside turns into a nightmare. Cheyenne’s words stick with you: “They were my everything.” If you’re looking for ways to prevent stuff like this, the CDC has good tips on drowning prevention at cdc.gov/drowning. The Bonham folks are holding strong, but losing Howard, Kaleb, and EJ? That’s a hole that’s not easy to fill.
