A holiday celebration at Lake Eola Park in Orlando, Florida, turned terribly awry when an accident with one of the drones during a much-awaited holiday drone show left a 7-year-old boy fighting for his life on December 21, 2024. The festive atmosphere filled with jollier holiday cheer and thousands of spectators morphed into one of panic because the event’s spectacle had turned to nightmare proportions.
The drone show presented by Sky Elements Drones was supposed to send the audience into a mesmerized state with a choreographed performance across the sky, replete with holiday-themed shapes. Upwards of 25,000 people went out to the park for some holiday magic, with two shows scheduled for the night. However, in that first show at 6:30 p.m., several drones malfunctioned mid-air and started running into each other, causing them to plunge into the crowd. The second show was not scheduled because of the technical problems.
The collision saw one of the drones strike 7-year-old Alezander Edgerton in the chest, with devastating force. This incident also resulted in serious injury, including damage to one of his heart valves. It was a truly horrible sight to see, as many of the onlookers were testifying to, including Alezander’s mother, Adriana Edgerton. “He was knocked out cold; blood was streaming from his mouth because the drone blade cut him,” she recounted the terrifying moment. An imprint of the drone was visible on his chest.
Alezander was immediately attended by the stationed paramedics at the event, who then rushed him to the hospital, where an emergency open-heart surgery was performed. Medical experts immediately got to work repairing the valve damage to his heart but are currently in critical condition, with his family awaiting word of the boy’s recovery.
The Drone Show and Its Failures
The drones of the holiday drone show were programmed for a choreographed, cutting-edge technological display. The shows have gained popularity as an eco-friendly alternative to fireworks. But its technology went awry as several of its drones veered off course and crashed into each other before falling into the crowd.
Experts suggest potential causes for the malfunction include:
GPS failure: There is an excessive reliance on GPS by the drones for positioning and synchronization, something that would mean loss of control should these signals be interfered with.

It was later discovered that the Federal Aviation Administration had initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
