A new TikTok challenge has the internet raising eyebrows — and ducking for cover.
Dubbed the “Watermelon Challenge,” this bizarre and potentially dangerous stunt is going viral for all the wrong reasons. The trend involves someone standing on top of a car (yes, really) and dropping a whole watermelon directly onto another person’s head. Unsurprisingly, it’s sparking concern across social media.
The trend first popped up earlier this week, with clips surfacing on TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). One of the most widely shared videos comes from X user @Raindropsmedia1, whose post on August 6 shows people balancing on cars and casually letting watermelons fly — all in what looks like suburban driveways and cul-de-sacs.
So far, the watermelon mayhem has racked up over 260,000 views and sparked plenty of commentary, ranging from laughter to serious worry.
“This challenge can cause brain surgery, needs to be stopped immediately,” one user warned.
“Y’all always discover new ways to unalive yourselves,” another commented bluntly.
And they’re not wrong — health experts say that dropping something as heavy as a watermelon (which can weigh up to 20 lbs!) from several feet above someone’s head can cause real, life-threatening injuries, including concussions or skull fractures.
Still, not everyone is sounding the alarm. Some users are reacting with disbelief — and even humor. One joked that the “CIA” must’ve created the challenge, while others are already speculating on what the next viral stunt could be.
Some people are calling out deeper issues. One comment asked, “Just why did it have to be Black people?”, pointing to the complicated ways race, representation, and stereotypes play out in viral content.
It’s unclear where the challenge started or how many people have actually attempted it, but the setup is familiar: a high-risk, high-reward TikTok stunt that gets views, shares, and a whole lot of attention. Some clips even include subtle branding like “MXM Manifold Media,” suggesting that at least part of the trend might be orchestrated for content.
And while this isn’t the first time watermelons have had a moment on TikTok (remember the watermelon diet and the mustard-on-watermelon trend?), this version leans way more into the shock factor — and the potential for harm.
Similar stunts, like the infamous Milk Crate Challenge, were eventually banned from TikTok after users ended up in the ER. Experts worry this could follow the same path.
So far, the platform hasn’t made a move to block or ban the Watermelon Challenge, but based on past patterns, that could change quickly — especially if injuries are reported or medical professionals speak out.
Until then, many users are taking to social media to warn others, while some are just watching in disbelief.
