Newly circulated bodycam footage from a 2025 fatal shooting in Texas is sparking renewed public reaction after a UK coroner ruled the death of 23-year-old Lucy Harrison an “unlawful killing,” despite U.S. authorities previously declining to bring charges.
The video, recorded by police in Prosper, Texas, shows Lucy’s father, Kris Harrison, calmly explaining to officers that his Glock pistol discharged while he was demonstrating it during an argument with his daughter. The incident occurred on Jan. 10, 2025, at Harrison’s home, about 35 miles north of Dallas.
Lucy, a British citizen from Warrington, Cheshire, had been visiting her father and was scheduled to return to the United Kingdom later that day. She died after being shot once in the chest inside her father’s bedroom.
In the bodycam footage, Harrison tells officers that Lucy asked about the gun and that he retrieved it from a bedside lockbox. “As I pulled it out, it just went off,” he says, gesturing with his hands as he describes the moment. Officers on the scene noted the smell of alcohol, and evidence later presented in court indicated Harrison had consumed a significant amount of wine earlier in the day.
Harrison maintained that the discharge was accidental and described the act as “teasing,” acknowledging that he did not check whether the weapon was loaded before handling it in front of his daughter.
Testimony presented at a February 2026 inquest at Cheshire Coroner’s Court painted a picture of a strained father-daughter relationship marked by disagreements over politics and firearms. Witnesses said Lucy was firmly opposed to guns and uncomfortable with their presence in the home. Family members referenced prior arguments involving Harrison’s conservative views and support for Donald Trump.
According to evidence reviewed at the inquest, tensions escalated on the day of the shooting during a discussion that shifted toward guns. Shortly afterward, Harrison led Lucy into his bedroom, where the fatal shot was fired approximately 30 minutes before she was due to leave for the airport.
In June 2025, a Collin County grand jury in Texas declined to indict Harrison on charges of manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide, determining the shooting to be accidental. Under Texas law, firearms may be legally possessed in the home without a license, and prosecutors concluded the evidence did not meet the threshold for criminal charges.
However, the UK inquest reached a different conclusion. Senior coroner Jacqueline Devonish ruled Lucy’s death an unlawful killing due to gross negligence manslaughter. While she did not find evidence of intent to kill, the coroner determined that pointing a firearm at chest height and pulling the trigger without checking whether it was loaded constituted reckless conduct posing an obvious risk of death.
British inquests do not bring criminal charges but can formally determine the manner of death.
The release and circulation of the bodycam footage have fueled intense reaction online, with many viewers expressing anger over the lack of prosecution in Texas and questioning Harrison’s composed demeanor in the video. Others have pointed to broader gun safety concerns, arguing that handling a firearm while intoxicated and failing to verify that it is unloaded reflects negligence that warrants criminal accountability, regardless of intent.
The case has also underscored the stark differences between U.S. and UK gun laws, as well as contrasting legal standards for negligence. While Texas authorities categorized the shooting as an accident, the UK ruling has reframed the incident in the public conversation as preventable and rooted in gross carelessness.
For Lucy Harrison’s family, the coroner’s decision marked a measure of acknowledgment, even as no charges were filed in the United States. As the footage continues to circulate, the case remains a flashpoint in ongoing debates over gun safety, responsibility and accountability on both sides of the Atlantic.
