Shawn Mendes Opens Up About Close Friendship with Camila Cabello

Shawn Mendes recently shared that he and Camila Cabello stay close friends despite everything that happened in the past. In an interview with The New York Times, Mendes expressed his frustration over misconceptions about their relationship. “It really bugs me when people think we’re against each other in a weird way,” he said.

For him, Cabello is not just an ex; she falls into one of his closest friends. He has also made it known that if something big happened in his life, she would be the first call. This just signifies how much respect and connection they really have, even after the romantic chapter of their relationship closed.

“I have nerves just even speaking about it, just what people would say. But honestly, if something was to happen in my family and if something was to happen to me, she’d probably be the first person I call, to this day. Our relationship is teaching me what love means, in a big way,” Mendes said.

One of the most striking relationship timelines is that of Shawn and Camila. The two met back in the year 2014 while working together on the set of the song “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Through the years, the two became great friends, each going to support the other’s career quite often. They would often collaborate musically, making them close enough.

In July 2019, they dropped their hit single “Señorita”, which signaled the start of their romantic relationship. The very palpable chemistry in the song and public appearances made the fans start guessing about their relationship status. Often photographed together in various situations, with sharing affectionate moments, it was confirmed before the public that these two were really in love.

One of the most breathtaking moments in the love life of Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello was at the 2019 American Music Awards. The sizzling chemistry between them was quite captivating while performing their song “Señorita.” It wasn’t just a song being sung but also an act of showing how two souls connect with each other. They shared intimate gazes with each other on stage and playfully interacted with one another.

However, the lovebirds eventually broke the news in November 2021 of their breakup after being together for over two years. Since then, they have expressed their closeness and furthered that they will still be friends and support each other, though the romance between them has gone cold.

In 2023, Mendes and Cabello gave way to reconciliation rumors whenever they were seen together at Coachella this year, sharing a very passionate kiss with each other. Later, the two talked about their relationship on all platforms as Cabello irresistibly candidly told the “Call Her Daddy” podcast about her impulsive nature of restarting the romance with Mendes, but they could not eventually make their love story work again.

Shawn also spoke about fighting his own mental demons and how he called off his “Wonder: The World Tour” in 2022 for working on his recovery. He said he has been going to therapy, and taking himself less seriously, is a big part of why he feels much better now.

All these years, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello have been candid about their relationship status, often reflecting on how they went from friends to boyfriend and girlfriend and finally back to friends. After their breakup, Mendes and Cabello took to social media to post a joint statement, saying they will “continue to be best friends.”

They told me that they really did not have a choice but to break up, although they would remain the best of friends for life. In this mutual decision, one could appreciate how much attachment these two people had with each other, even after they had decided not to be a couple anymore.

In various interviews, Mendes has spoken about the ups and downs of their affair emotively, especially how it felt breaking up with someone in the public eye. Cabello has also spoken about her feelings in regard to their relationship. She even shared at one point that getting back together with Mendes was impulsive, which was typical of her emotional nature.

Cabello told sources that though they are close, they are mainly wary of going back to a romantic relationship. The stars said comprehensively in separate interviews that they were keen on being friends, and despite the romantic turmoil they faced, their friendship was still tight.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s relationship stands tall to prove that two of the most powerful elements in a relationship are friendship and respect. While he and she plod along their separate ways in the music industry, their bond seems to grow with every day passing by.

Mendes’s candid reflections on their journey bring us face-to-face with the fact that love can be portrayed in many ways, and sometimes the best relationships are those that take some time to develop. Whether as friends or collaborators, the energy between them is such that the world still draws inspiration from them.
