Rapper Roddy Ricch has recovered his missing Grammy Award. But not without some startling plot twists. The Grammy-a 2019 win for the song “Racks in the Middle” featuring Nipsey Hussle and Mustard-finally turned up in the most unlikely of places: an abandoned storage unit that YouTuber Prieto Hunters bought for the low sum of $280.
The Grammy, instead, had been found in one of the regular purchases of storage unit finds YouTuber Prieto Hunters. The coveted award was enclosed in a black Tumi suitcase amongst many other items. Hunters previously claimed he was willing to “work something out” with Ricch’s team for the return of the award. Things quickly did a U-turn, however, when he reportedly asked for $50,000 and an Audemars Piguet watch in exchange for the Grammy.
Roddy Ricch reacted to this very situation while going live on Instagram and spoke of his take on how it all happened. According to him, that particular storage unit had been messed with since his assistant got into a terrible motorcycle accident, was in a coma, and hadn’t gotten out yet. Ricch explained that the stuff was never intentionally left during all the chaos.
And, when Ricch’s camp began negotiations, the rapper first came across the table with a $10,000 offer for the safe return of the Grammy. However, when Hunters continually pushed demands of high-value items and cash, Ricch grew suspicions the YouTuber was only really interested in leveraging the stunt for attention. “It was never about getting it back on good faith,” Ricch said.
With news of the incident getting out, Prieto Hunters soon found himself at the eye of a maelstrom. He said threats poured in for him and his family, with some messages containing his personal information, including his home address and social security number. The backlash turned it all into what Hunters described as a “nightmare.”
Ricch promptly made a public denial regarding his involvement in the threats and clarified how important the Grammy was, personally and to his family and community. Through it all, Ricch said, “My intentions were never evil” in trying to resolve the issue.
Finally, the officials recovered the Grammy to Ricch. The police arranged a meeting in one station where the award was received by the assistant of Ricch. The hunters returned only grammy to those two people with cameras for capturing that movement.
Ricch was relieved that the Grammy had been returned and reassured them that neither he nor his team had intended to cause any harm. He told them the award, in itself, meant a lot to him; it was huge, not only in his career but also for his community.
The incident had underlined complexities and challenges in the way valuables that are misplaced are handled.
