Roblox, the wildly popular gaming platform for kids, faces a firestorm of criticism as Congressman Ro Khanna steps in to address serious Roblox child safety concerns. RealSchlep, a YouTuber with over 561,000 subscribers, has made waves by targeting alleged predators on Roblox, claiming his efforts led to six arrests. However, Roblox banned his account and issued a cease-and-desist letter, accusing him of violating platform rules by staging simulated child-endangerment conversations and sharing private user information. Schlep fired back, saying he sent evidence of predatory behavior to Roblox’s safety team multiple times but got no meaningful response.
His ban has ignited a backlash, with creators like KreekCraft and JiDion rallying behind him, fueling hashtags like #FreeSchlep and #BoycottRoblox on social media. Congressman Khanna, who serves on the Oversight and Accountability Committee, is amplifying the issue. He launched a petition calling for Roblox to be more transparent about how it handles reports of predatory behavior.
In a video shared by Schlep, Khanna stated,
“Roblox is simply not doing enough to protect our kids, inform parents, and go after child predators.”
His involvement has raised the stakes, suggesting Roblox could face tougher regulations or legal consequences. The platform, which boasts over 380 million monthly active users, mostly children and teens, has been hit with multiple lawsuits alleging negligence. Recent cases include a 13-year-old girl in Iowa allegedly abducted after being groomed on Roblox, an 11-year-old girl in Florida raped by a predator she met on the platform, and a 13-year-old boy in California coerced into sending explicit images. These lawsuits claim Roblox’s chat system and virtual currency, Robux, make it easy for predators to exploit kids.
Florida’s Attorney General also issued a subpoena in April 2024 to investigate Roblox’s safety measures. Roblox insists it prioritizes safety, pointing to AI-powered moderation, parental controls, and partnerships with law enforcement. The company recently introduced face scans for age verification and stricter chat filters for users under 13.
Yet critics, including researchers and attorneys, argue these steps are not enough.
