Washington, D.C.‘s small, close-knit art scene is in a state of shock following the sudden death of well-known muralist/illustrator Big Donno, who committed suicide on July 21, 2025. It comes a year after he suffered a devastating loss with the death of his teenage son, Raaziq Williams. His friends say it left him despondent and lost.
Big Donno, a.k.a. “KurtieTop” to many, was something greater than a fixture in the city’s cultural landscape—he was its beat. His colorful, passionate murals brought vibrancy and expression to the streets, transforming bare city corners into beautiful testaments to identity, heritage, and perseverance. His artwork spoke for the thousands within the District, from community rec center walls to massive-scale public pieces.
He was also a rapper known for his works like “FIRST DAY OUT FREESTYLE” and collaborations such as “Leg on Me” with Splee Leg.
He wasn’t just creating for himself. Donno made it a mission to uplift others, particularly young artists from underserved communities. He mentored dozens over the years, offering his time, talent, and hard-earned wisdom. Many say his support changed their lives.
“He saw something in all of us—even when we didn’t,”
One former mentee shared.
The pain of losing his son, Raaziq, in 2024 was something Donno never fully recovered from. While the cause of Raaziq’s death has not been publicly confirmed, tributes on social media describe it as sudden and devastating. Friends, family, and fans frequently praised Donno for the way he loved his son—openly, proudly, and without apology. Posts remembering Raaziq often included heartfelt images and videos of father and son, and called Donno a “real one” and a “father every kid deserves.”
In the days before his death, Donno posted a brief, raw message online:
“I really tried, ma. I tried, I tried…”
Those close to him say it reflected a year of quiet struggle, marked by grief too deep for words.
At this time, no official details have been released about the circumstances of his passing. But the shock across the city is palpable. Candlelight vigils are already being planned. Artists are organizing tribute walls. Conversations about mental health, grief, and the emotional burdens carried in silence are spreading across timelines and group chats.
