Over 100 Minors Die by Gun Violence, Anti-Lgbtq

Over 100 minors die by gun violence each year in Tennessee lgbtq

Each month in the United States, an average of two LGBT youth are killed. These young people are often the victims of violent crimes, and in many cases, their deaths are racially motivated.

*Gun violence disproportionately affects young people from low-income backgrounds. This means that, in addition to being victimized by racist and sexist violence, these youth are also deprived of the safety nets many of us take for granted – including access to healthcare, housing and employment.

Over the last decade, gun suicides have risen sharply in the United States. They are now at their highest levels on record.

Moreover, the number of gun murders has increased significantly in recent years. They have climbed 10% over five years and 25% over 10 years.

The number of transgender, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming people killed by violence has also risen in recent years. In 2020, 57 members of this group died by violence, surpassing the previous year’s record of 44.

Some of these victims are killed by a loved one, an acquaintance or stranger. Others may be targeted by a hostile environment or an anti-transgender bias.

In addition, the sexism and transphobia that often surrounds these cases of fatal violence also puts LGBTQ+ people at greater risk of being homeless or living in survival sex situations. These people are at risk of being displaced from their homes and communities, unable to obtain the necessary health care and services to survive.
