Oakland Rapper’s Taunting Video Resurfaces After Shooting

Oakland rapper Tan DaGod was shot and killed at her beauty supply store earlier this week. While the news was a bombshell in Indy’s music circles, it seems like one video has re-erupted into flames igniting her reputation within an artistic debate surrounding ethnography.

Tan DaGod was beginning to carve a name for herself in the Oakland rap world with razor-sharp lyrics to back up her no-fucks-given attitude. Songs like ‘Controlla Freestyle’ showed her pure ability to flow which ended up winning over local fans. Taking inspiration from legends such as Mr. Fab, and BLASTA she had dreams of doing songs with the likes Draek & Nikki Minaj just to name a few.

But her legacy is starting to evolve in some tricky ways. And then a video of Tan DaGod came out making fun of the dead ex-boyfriend and challenging all his homies to shoot. The clip which is interesting, because both a strange and fiery side of her fans have not seen for years ruffling feathers within music industry circles lately has only added fuel to THESE claims.

But this was not a one-time thing. The scorching accusations towards her deceased ex by the full album made a strong case for Tan DaGod, turned people off and pulled them right back in yet again all consistent with who she is as an artist. While some lauded her bold statement, others accused of instigating discord.

The appearance of the video nearly four years later has inflamed discussions in Oakland and beyond. Half of the city is outraged by them, and half are a lament for the fate which they will bring. It is a somber indication of the complexity of her artistry, an artist whose musical catalog will always remain inextricably and justly linked to all its associated controversies.

The loss of Tan DaGod is a serious hit to the Oakland rap world. What sets her apart is also the unique fashion style and the amazing lyrical dominance. The video confronts the split-between her art and public response as well-cutting to shots of fans in the crowd while others pay belts lamenting with Flor herself.

This is evident enough from her very aspirations of working with the industry giants. Irrespective of the controversy, it is hard to deny Tan DaGod’s impact on our own scene. Multiple voices can be heard weighing in on the fight over her legacy, but still: It remains undeniable that her brutally candid and bold music carries huge currency with a lot of people.
