NYC Goes 5 Days Without a Shooting Victim for the First Time in 30 Years

New York City marked a milestone unseen in nearly three decades recently, five straight days without one shooting victim. It stretched from Sunday, January 21 to Thursday, January 25, 2025-a tiny period, but so impactful to this city, long facing the effects of gun violence.

The news offered from The announcement by an eager NYPD on Thursday received cautioned optimism. That streak came to a tragic end just minutes later, though, when a 34-year-old man in Brooklyn was shot in an argument that started over a car accident. Shortly after, another shooting occurred in the Bronx, in which a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg. Both survived, but the short-lived respite from violence was a reminder of how far the city has come and how much work remains.

A Moment to Reflect

The five-day streak here was a big win for a city that has always had to live with gun violence. To put that in perspective, it was the longest stretch without shootings since 1994, the year the NYPD introduced its CompStat system to track crime data.

“This achievement highlights the effectiveness of our strategies and the dedication of our officers,”

said Police Commissioner Edward Caban.

“We’ve made great strides in keeping our neighborhoods safer, but there’s still much work to be done.”

This wasn’t all luck; it resulted from years of planning, new technology, and better communal relations. The NYPD has invested like never before in making streets safer, with unprecedented investment in everything from precision policing to community outreach, and that is finally beginning to bear fruit.

The Keys to Success

The recent reduction in gun violence stems from a multi-pronged approach that combines law enforcement, technology, and community engagement:

Increased Police Presence: They were deployed en masse in high-crime areas or highly criminalized localities to maximize the visibility and reassurance of such neighborhoods, which are most vulnerable to violence.

Advanced Technology: ShotSpotter-like machines that detect gunfire in real-time have helped officers reach faster and retrieve important evidence.

Community Policing: Community trust was built by the NYPD through neighborhood policing and the deployment of body-worn cameras that increased transparency and accountability.

Precision policing: uses the analysis of crime data from CompStat, making the NYPD put its resources at hotspots before deterioration.

Mental Health Collaboration: The partnerships with mental health professionals have provided resources for people in crisis, reducing incidents that could lead to violence.

A Citywide Shift

The impact is being felt across the city as neighborhoods once plagued by violence begin to see tangible change.

South Bronx: Interventions such as Cure Violence have really caused serious declines in gunshot injuries and shooting victimization in the South Bronx.

East New York: Similarly, East New York has benefited from community-based violence prevention strategies and has seen a 50% drop in gun injuries.

Flatbush: Shootings have decreased in this Brooklyn neighborhood, too, thanks to local initiatives.

Shootings citywide were down 25% in 2025 compared to last year’s period, indicative of the working strategies.

The Role of Illegal Guns

A huge chunk of the city’s effort has been to take illegal guns off the streets. More than 20,000 illegal guns have been seized since 2022; shootings are down 42%, and homicides have fallen by 23%. Ghost guns – untraceable firearms made from kits or 3D-printed parts – have also become a focus of the crackdown.

Mayor Eric Adams highlighted the importance of these efforts: “Every gun taken off the streets is a life potentially saved. We’re making progress, but we must remain vigilant.”

Community Voices

Five days without shooting had not just been a sweet win for them-the law and enforcement-but it would bring a breakthrough with the win over the citizens. After those changes there comes cautious optimist from innumerable community leaders apart from residents at most.

“It feels good to walk outside and not hear about another shooting, We need more of this,”

Said Maria Lopez, who lived in the South Bronx.

Others pointed to the importance of building on that momentum.

“This shows what is possible when the community and the police work together,”

Said Reverend James Carter, a longtime proponent of violence prevention in Brooklyn.

While the streak is a sign of progress, challenges remain. Gun violence still stalks large swaths of the city, and the spate of shootings in Brooklyn and the Bronx shows starkly how much work lies ahead. The NYPD is also committed to sustaining its efforts by expanding community outreach and integrating technology into its strategies.

The city continues to address the root causes of violence, like poverty, a lack of education, and access to mental health resources. For one brief, shining moment, New York City glimpsed what it might be like to rid itself of such violence-a dream many would like to see come true one day. The milestone may have been short-lived, but it’s a powerful reminder that better days are possible.

“We’ve seen what’s possible,” it’s now up to all of us-law enforcement, community leaders, and everyday New Yorkers to continue in that trajectory.

Said Commissioner Caban.
