According to prosecutors, the incident happened just after 7 p.m. on June 29 along the Garden State Parkway in Woodbridge Township. Investigators allege that Alvi Limani, 20, was behind the wheel of a BMW X3 SUV when he began racing another driver — Jeter Ogando, 23, of Perth Amboy — who was driving a BMW M5.
During the high-speed race, Limani’s SUV reportedly slammed into two other vehicles before flipping over multiple times. The violent crash threw two of his passengers from the vehicle: Albion Hysenaj, 20, who died later that night at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and a 21-year-old man who survived but sustained serious injuries. Another passenger, Emily Harrington, 19, was not ejected from the vehicle.
Police say both Limani and Harrington fled the scene on foot. In the days that followed, investigators tracked Limani to Miami — where they say he was traveling with his mother, Vilma Vneshta, 42, in an attempt to leave the U.S.
On July 17, U.S. Marshals and local law enforcement intercepted the pair at the airport, just before they were set to board an international flight. Authorities have not shared where they were headed.
Limani now faces an array of serious charges, including first-degree aggravated manslaughter, second-degree vehicular homicide, and multiple counts of leaving the scene of an accident and endangering victims. Vneshta is charged with third-degree hindering for allegedly helping her son try to escape. Harrington is also facing charges of hindering, obstruction, and conspiracy to endanger another person.
Ogando, the second driver in the alleged race, has been charged with vehicular homicide, endangering, and assault by auto.
Both Limani and Vneshta have been extradited to New Jersey and are being held at the Middlesex County Correctional Facility. All four suspects are scheduled to appear in court on August 28.
The investigation, conducted by the New Jersey State Police Troop “D” Holmdel Station Criminal Investigation Office and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Crash Investigations Unit, is ongoing. Officials warn that illegal street racing remains a serious public safety issue in the tri-state area.
“We will pursue those responsible for endangering lives, no matter how far they try to run,” a New Jersey State Police spokesperson said.
