New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick apologizes to the media after the disappointing loss to the Indianapolis Colts game this past Saturday. Belichick stunned the world with a rare confession to the media to start off his Monday press conference. He apologized to the media for being “short” with them. It seems Belichick does have a heart and simply after a day to reflect he realizes he was in the wrong.
“I’ll just start off here. Look fellas, I apologize if it seemed like I was a little short with you after the game,” Belichick said. “Obviously a frustrating game. Down 20-0. Didn’t do anything well enough. I mean, there isn’t really much to say at that point without watching the film.”
“Clearly we had problems in every area, so there’s no simple answer. Every play could have been better. Every area of coaching could have been better. We as a whole could have been better. Any of that would have helped.”
“(I’m) not really trying to be short, but honestly there wasn’t too much to say. I don’t know if there’s a whole lot more to say now, but it’s not your fault. It was a frustrating game.”
New England Patriots shortcomings
The Patriot’s offense was held to just 103 yards and zero points in the first half. Rookie quarterback Mac Jones turned the ball over twice which led to them being down 20-0 at halftime. However, in the second half, the Patriots began to rally back.
They were able to cut the deficit to 20-17 until Colts running back Jonathan Taylor broke a 67-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Ultimately, that was the dagger but a list of mistakes cost the Patriots the game. The Pats were able to gather 262 yards alone in the second half after being dominated in the first half.
This led to the emotional Belichick press conference. He didn’t seem to give much in his press conference besides “we’ll look at the film”. The most detailed answer he gave in the press conference was when a reporter asked him about the unforced errors on the first question of his press conference:
“I don’t know. Maybe you know what went wrong. I don’t know,” Belichick said. “Obviously, we didn’t do anything well enough, I don’t know how else to say it.”
One can agree, this for sure sparked the rude and “short” commentary to the question. However, Belichick rarely ever apologizes but did so out of the kindness of his heart. While there’s no specific reasoning for the apology it is rare and happy to see Belichick caring about something outside of football.
