What a captivating show! Recently NAACP hosted their 52nd Annual Image Awards on March 27th 2021. Last year was like no other. Safe distancing protocols have forced various award shows to pivot in a new direction. With COVID still in effect, the Image Awards took a different approach by holding a completely virtual show. Filled with live performances and a week-long celebration of black excellence; the Image awards was truly one for the books. Read below to find out what you missed from the NAACP Virtual Experience.
All week long, fans were able to explore stories, re-watch past performances from Jennifer Hudson, The Fugees, Boyz II Men, Luther Vandross, and take a trip down memory lane to Tyler Perry’s powerful acceptance speech.
Other new elements included several workshops and conversations including one hosted by Black-ish actor, Miles Brown. The NAACP Young Creatives conversation series featured accomplished young artists under the age of 16 who discussed their talent and aspirations for the future. Presenters included; Nicole Beharie, Tamar Braxton, Damson Idris, Daymond John, Leslie Jones, Javicia Leslie, Madalen Mills, MAJOR., Method Man, Retta & Reno Wilson, Marcus Scribner, J.B. Smoove, Terrence Terrell, Susan Kelechi Watson, the cast of BET’s Bigger and CeCe Winans.
The night was also comprised of special appearances from former First Lady, Michelle Obama, Stacey Abrams, Samuel L. Jackson, and more.
Besides the virtual elements, NAACP also surprised attendees with a drive-through experience, red carpet access, and complimentary food trucks. The drive-in, sponsored by AT&T/ Humanity of connection, was held at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.
