Miss Argentina and Miss Puerto Rico Marry After Secret 2-Year Romance

Two beauty queens who once competed against each other for the same international crown ended up choosing each other instead. Mariana Varela of Argentina and Fabiola Valentín of Puerto Rico met at the 2020 Miss Grand International pageant in Thailand, kept their romance private for nearly two years, and quietly married in San Juan on October 28, 2022. Their story still circulates years later because it feels almost too perfect: rivals who became partners under the bright lights of a global stage.

Varela, born in Buenos Aires in 1996, had already claimed the Miss Universe Argentina title in 2019 and represented her country on the Miss Universe stage. Valentín, born in Camuy, Puerto Rico, in 1999, finished in the top three at Miss Universe Puerto Rico the same year. Both later earned the Miss Grand titles for their territories and headed to Thailand for the 2020 Miss Grand International competition. The event had been delayed by the pandemic; the final took place on March 27, 2021. Both women advanced to the Top 10. Neither took the crown, which went to Abena Appiah of the United States, but something more lasting began between them.

In the pressure-cooker environment of an international pageant, the two became inseparable even while competing. Later, in a 2023 Fenty Eau de Parfum campaign, they described the early connection in their own words. They met in Thailand, started talking, and quickly learned the small details of each other’s lives, including how each preferred her coffee. What began as friendship deepened. After the pageant they continued seeing each other across the long distance between Argentina and Puerto Rico, posting photos and affectionate captions that read as close friendship to most followers. They chose not to make the romantic nature of the relationship public.

By 2022 the private relationship had grown into a commitment. The proposal took place in a room filled with candles, rose petals, and balloons spelling out “Marry Me?” On October 28 they stood outside the judicial center in San Juan, both dressed in white, and completed a civil ceremony with only a small circle of family and close friends present. Same-sex marriage had been legal in Puerto Rico since 2015. A few days later they posted matching Instagram Reels. The short video moved through beach walks, quiet moments together, the balloon-filled proposal, and ended with the two of them kissing outside the courthouse. The Spanish caption was simple and direct: “After deciding to keep our relationship private, we opened the doors on a special day. 28/10/22.”

The post spread quickly. Fellow contestants congratulated them. Appiah, the woman who had beaten them both for the 2020 title, called it a beautiful union born from the pageant. The Miss Grand International organization itself posted support, saying the group always backed “love without boundaries.” Varela responded to the wave of messages by writing that she and Valentín were very happy and blessed, and that she hoped the love coming their way would return multiplied to everyone who offered it.

In the years since, the couple has lived largely out of the spotlight while remaining open about their life together. They starred in the romantic Fenty campaign in early 2023, speaking on camera about how a competition turned into a lasting partnership. They have shared anniversary posts, occasional joint appearances, and updates that show them building a shared home, primarily in Puerto Rico. As of 2026 they continue to appear together in personal videos and social media, still referring to each other as wives. The story that once surprised pageant fans has settled into something quieter and more ordinary: two people who found each other in an unexpected place and chose to stay.

What began under stage lights in Thailand has lasted longer than any crown. Varela and Valentín’s path from competitors to spouses remains one of the more memorable love stories to emerge from the international pageant circuit.
