MC Lyte, Lil Kim, Rap Legends Honor Queen Latifah

Female Rap Legends Unite for Queen Latifah

MC Lyte, Lil Kim, Monie Love lit up the 2021 BET Awards stage with lyrical sensation Rapsody to honor Queen Latifah. The rap phenoms performed “U.N.I.T.Y.” and “Ladies First,” two Queen Latifah classics.

    A Moving Acceptance Speech

Escorted to the stage by her dad, Lancelot Owens, Sr., Queen Latifah stylishly graced the stage. When Queen Latifah speaks, the culture listens.

“Thank you so much everyone,” she said. “Thank you my sisters. You’re my sisters in the name of rap. You always have been. I’m so extremely moved. I don’t even know what to say. Let me just say that I wanna thank God because God designed this whole thing to be this way.

“I’m grateful for my amazing parents, my loving family, and my supportive friends who are always there for me, through thick and thin. They have been my rock and I cherish them deeply.”

    Women Supporting Women

Following Queen’s emotional acceptance of The Lifetime Achievement Award, she continued to thank BET. In addition, she stressed the need for women to be supportive of one another.

“I want to express my gratitude to BET for providing a platform for the celebration and empowerment of Black culture. When other platforms overlooked us, BET embraced us and allowed us to showcase our full potential. I appreciate everyone who performed on stage and all the supporters in the audience. Embrace your Blackness because it is beautiful. I owe my strength and upbringing to a remarkable Black woman.”

She ended with,” I wanted to celebrate us because I know together we stand stronger than when we tear each other apart. Respect to all the female MCs on the stage tonight. Happy Pride!”

Salute to a rap legend and actress who has made her mark on the culture. She’s definitely not done yet.
