A routine traffic stop in Florida on New Year’s Eve spiraled into a wild scene of foot chases, a gun grab, and a high-speed pursuit all while deputies rescued a missing 11-year-old boy from the clutches of a registered sex offender.
It began with a concerned citizen’s 911 call around 7 a.m. on December 31, 2025, reporting suspicious activity near U.S. Highway 1 and Whiteview Drive in Flagler County. Deputies pulled over a white Ford F-150 driven by Darnell Hairston, 60, from Hastings. Inside were two juveniles: the missing boy from St. Johns County, who’d been gone for about three days, and 15-year-old Junior Bishop, also from Hastings.
The boy looked traumatized. Deputies moved fast, securing him in a patrol car away from Hairston. Right away, he told them he’d been kidnapped and feared for his life.
Bodycam footage from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office shows how things went south in seconds. As a deputy told Hairston to turn around for cuffing, he bolted across the road, tripping but keeping on. Deputies caught up and tackled him.
During the tussle, Hairston reached for a deputy’s holstered gun. “Stop reaching!” officers shouted as they pinned him down and cuffed him despite his resistance. The video, released by the sheriff’s office, highlights the split-second dangers deputies face in what started as a simple check.
With deputies focused on Hairston, Bishop jumped back into the truck and peeled out, nearly hitting an officer in the road. The chase headed west on State Road 100 toward Putnam County.
Bishop swerved into traffic and rammed a patrol car, sending both vehicles into the woods. The truck flipped multiple times. Another deputy’s car skidded out and hit a repair shop in Bunnell. Bishop walked away unhurt and was arrested. Two deputies got minor injuries but were treated at AdventHealth Palm Coast and released the same day.
At the hospital, the boy shared his ordeal. He said Hairston lured him to a wooded campsite in Flagler Estates, choked him until he passed out, then tied him with shoelaces and an extension cord, taped his mouth with duct tape, and threatened him with a knife and gun. For days, he was held captive and hidden under a blanket in the truck.
Search warrants on Hairston’s truck, home, and campsite turned up matching items: duct tape, weapons, and surveillance gear. On January 2, 2026, Hairston got hit with more charges kidnapping a child under 13, aggravated child abuse, battery by strangulation, and robbery with a deadly weapon on top of his initial counts of resisting with violence and trying to grab an officer’s gun.
Hairston admitted he knew the boy was missing but couldn’t explain why he kept him. He’s held without bond at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. Bishop faces aggravated fleeing, battery on an officer, reckless driving, driving without a license, resisting, and grand theft auto. He’s in Florida Department of Juvenile Justice custody and could see more charges as a possible co-conspirator.
Sheriff Rick Staly called it a win for public vigilance.
“This pervert is back behind bars where he belongs,”
He said in a statement, crediting the caller’s “see something, say something” tip for the safe recovery.
Cases like this underscore gaps in tracking registered sex offenders across counties Hairston had a 2005 conviction for molesting a minor and a string of priors, per Florida Department of Law Enforcement records. It shows how one alert citizen can make all the difference, turning everyday stops into life-saving interventions.
