Lizzo Shares How She and SZA Almost Started the Band ‘Pussy Lasers’

Lizzo recently dropped a hilarious and unexpected morsel of gossip regarding her friendship with SZA—once upon a time, the two had nearly formed a rock group together. The Grammy Award-winning singer spilled on the history of their collaborative ventures on a Valentine’s Day Twitch stream, where she fondly joked about how they had once had plans to form a group together along with its off-the-wall name: Pussy Lasers.

According to Lizzo, she also had plenty of time with SZA together in the studio where they were playing around non-stop with new ideas and noises. The group idea started out of improvisation sessions. A third unknown artist also got together with them, but nothing really panned out with that venture.

“We were drinking, we were making songs, we were eating pasta, and we were like, ‘Let’s form a band,’” Lizzo remembers.

Though they never formally debuted together as a rock group, their union produced some standout tracks, including on SZA’s album SOS.

One of the most well-known outcomes of Lizzo and SZA’s session together is F2F, the pop-punk-influenced hit on SZA’s album SOS, released in 2022. Lizzo had been involved early on in the track, providing background harmonies and singing what she called a “mumble verse.” While her vocals were never incorporated into the final version of the track, she was nonetheless a big fan of the track.

Reflecting on her creative process, Lizzo admired how well SZA can connect on that raw feeling and turn it into lyrics. “She writes the wildest, most insane things that you’re thinking and feeling, but she just finds a way to articulate it,” she said, admiring that she had been surprised by how easily SZA had freestyled on the track within the studio. Lizzo and SZA have had numerous musical collaborations through their friendship throughout the years. The two appeared together on stage in 2021 to perform a live version of Special by Lizzo, on which SZA sang vocals. A second track, Coochie, leaked on social media in 2023 but has yet to be officially released.

Their bond is also taken outside of music, where the two constantly compliment each other on social media. The fans have been speculating on collabs forever, and Lizzo’s latest confessions only fan that flame bigger.

In addition to reminiscing on her past projects, Lizzo also confirmed that her Special era is finally coming to an end on February 28. She confirmed that she had been penning new music throughout the last two years and is set to start a new era of her career.
