Lizzo made history by being the first Black woman to twerk and play a crystal flute.
“B,***h, I just twerked and played James Madison’s crystal flute from the 1800s,” Lizzo said during the live performance.
The dancer and singer was invited by the Librarian of Congress herself on Twitter to perform with a James Madison flute! According to the Library of Congress’ Twitter page, it was perfectly safe for the instrument to be played for the first time by Lizzo. In fact, some of the historically-significant instruments in the collection were donated under the explicit condition that they “remain functional” and are even played!

Legend has it, the flute was rescued during the fire at the White House that occurred in 1814. But, is history really this cool? Unfortunately, the answer might be “no”. America’s been racist since before the time of James Madison’s presidency. Comments on social media prove that unfortunately, this remains reality to this day.
Lizzo is rocking the heck out of what society serves her, but do we really deserve it? A Black woman entertained the country safely and respectfully, and people want to hate her because she is a Black woman!
