Traffic was rolling along like any other Wednesday afternoon in Uptown Charlotte. Then, just before 5 p.m. on February 18, 2026, it all ground to a halt at corner of Trade and Tryon streets.
Charlotte Hornets guardLaMelo Ballwas westbound in his custom camouflage 2022 GMC Hummer EV when he went for an unprotected left turn. He caught a gray Kia sedan coming straight through the light eastbound, and the hit was hard enough to rip the Hummer’s front-left wheel clean off. Both vehicles ended up dead in the middle of the intersection, sitting on the streetcar tracks and backing up downtown traffic for a little while.

One person got checked out for minor, non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. Ball walked away fine no scratches. Multiple people close to the team said he was still on track to play the next night against the Houston Rockets.
Folks who were there told reporters they saw Ball step out of the driver’s side wearing an aqua Hornets hoodie, then climb into a Lamborghini that pulled up and took off. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police rolled up quick, taped everything off, and had both cars towed. By Thursday morning no charges had been filed, and the department still hasn’t officially said who was actually behind the wheel of either vehicle.
The 28-second clip that blew up everywhere first posted by the X account @FearedBuck and grabbed by WSOC-TV shows exactly what went down. The big camo Hummer rolls into the intersection, starts its left, and tags the passenger side of the Kia at pretty low speed. You can literally watch the wheel shear off and roll across the pavement while debris flies. The two cars sit there locked together as people start gathering on the sidewalks and the first sirens get louder. No flips, no chase, just a regular city wreck that got famous because of who was driving.
Social media lit up fast. People swore he was on his phone, called the Lamborghini exit a straight flee, and flooded feeds with GTA memes. Old clips of Ball weaving through traffic outside the Spectrum Center came right back too.
For context, the 24-year-old was the third overall pick in 2020, took home Rookie of the Year in ’21, and this season he’s averaging 19.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.4 assists across 45 games. His flashy rides and past viral driving moments have kept him in the headlines for years.
That intersection stays packed all day, every day. Local crews got the crossing cleared and reopened pretty quick, just like WCNC reported.
The investigation is still going. Police are sorting through everything while fans and critics keep picking apart the video and guessing what’s next. Ball’s status for Thursday’s game in Houston hasn’t changed, but the talk around this crash definitely isn’t slowing down.
