Rising hip-hop artist Kizzy Brown is opening up like never before.
In a conversation with 411 Uncut in July, the Cincinnati-born artist revealed that she became pregnant while still in elementary school—and was the mother of two children by the time she graduated from high school. Her vulnerability during the interview has since gone viral, with many praising her courage in speaking about a largely taboo topic.
“How old were you when you had your first child?”
The interviewer asked. Brown paused.
“Oh, that’s a… If I tell you that, I have to tell you a story,” she replied. “I can’t tell you that, but I was in elementary [school] pregnant. I’m going to say that.”
Now in her late 20s, Brown described her early journey into motherhood as overwhelming and surreal.
“Parenthood happened very much early because I didn’t know. Like, I knew, but I didn’t know,” she shared. “So through high school and everything, I was a mom. Already. Middle school… two kids by the time I graduated.”
The rapper, who grew up on Cincinnati’s East Side, spoke candidly about the impact of her early pregnancies on her family, especially her mother.
“At first, it was crazy for her,” Brown said. “She definitely accepted it… She was a young grandma. That just made me laugh. Why would I do that to that lady?”
Despite the challenges, Brown says her mother stood by her and ultimately embraced her role as a young grandmother.
“I had some beautiful children,” Brown said proudly. “They loved my mom. My mom loved her grandkids.”
Her coming-of-age in a community marked by struggle and survival forced her to develop both resilience and a fierce sense of loyalty. But the challenges extended far beyond the home. Behavioral conflicts and resistance to authority defined Brown’s academic years. Her confrontations with educators and administrators led to numerous school transfers and even intervention by police after a bomb threat incident following 9/11. “My mom was ashamed. I could feel it,” she said. “But I was just trying to survive.”

Her pursuit of independence—getting her apartment, managing bills, and providing care—mirrored the adult roles she had assumed from childhood. Lacking a clear path forward and facing the dual challenges of motherhood and economic uncertainty, she turned inward—channeling her experiences into music.
