In a heartfelt Instagram Story, Kardashian, a Los Angeles native, didn’t hold back.
“When we witness innocent, hardworking people being ripped from their families in inhumane ways, we have to speak up. We have to do what’s right,”
She wrote, addressing her 356 million followers. She painted a vivid picture of immigrants as the heartbeat of LA, calling them “neighbors, friends, classmates, coworkers, and family.” Her message was clear: these raids are tearing apart communities, and there’s got to be a better way.
The raids, which kicked off on June 3 and 4, 2025, saw over 4,600 people detained across LA, including at workplaces like Ambiance Apparel in the Fashion District. One heartbreaking case involved a 23-year-old Zapotec man, a non-criminal who was deported after reportedly mistaking a deportation form for a COVID test. Stories like these have fueled outrage, with advocacy groups reporting that many of those detained had lived in the U.S. for decades, contributing to the city’s vibrant culture.
But the fallout has been anything but peaceful. Protests erupted on June 9, 2025, and have only grown more intense. Demonstrators have clashed with law enforcement, blocking freeways and setting fires. On June 8, protesters in downtown LA torched Waymo self-driving taxis, spray-painting anti-ICE messages and smashing windows.
By June 9, the unrest escalated further, with masked looters ransacking an Apple Store at the Apple Tower Theatre on West 8th Street and Broadway, along with other businesses like Adidas, Nike, and T-Mobile. Jewelry stores on 6th Street were also hit, with display boxes left scattered on sidewalks. The Los Angeles Police Department reported over 100 arrests for looting and vandalism, with one woman detained at the Apple Store scene.
The Trump administration’s response has only fanned the flames. President Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to LA, a move California Governor Gavin Newsom called “purposefully inflammatory.” Mayor Karen Bass, declaring a curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. in downtown LA, slammed the raids for sowing terror and vowed to uphold the city’s sanctuary city status.
“Anyone who vandalized or looted doesn’t care about our immigrant communities,”
Bass said on X, promising accountability.
ICE insists the raids targeted criminals, including gang members and drug traffickers, but the numbers tell a different story. Advocacy groups like the ACLU report over 200 non-criminals were detained, some held without access to lawyers or family. The use of military-style tactics, including masked agents in tactical gear and drones, has drawn sharp criticism for creating panic.
